Role Summary
As an Assistant Nurse Manager (ANM) — Critical Care at Howard University Hospital, you will serve as the primary nursing leadership presence during night shift operations across our Medical Intensive Care Unit (MICU) and Surgical Intensive Care Unit (SICU), partnering with the Nurse Manager to ensure the safe and effective delivery of patient-centered care for critically ill patients requiring advanced monitoring and life-sustaining interventions. You will provide onsite oversight of clinical operations, staffing, and staff development within a high-acuity critical care environment — and will assume full leadership responsibility for unit operations in the absence of the Nurse Manager.

What You’ll Do
- Provide onsite night shift leadership and operational oversight across the Medical ICU (MICU) and Surgical ICU (SICU), ensuring safe staffing, clinical coverage, and continuity of care
- Align staffing assignments to patient acuity, census fluctuations, and critical care demands in real time
- Supervise, coach, and mentor nursing staff; assist with performance evaluations and corrective action or improvement plans as needed
- Support recruitment, interviewing, and onboarding of critical care nursing staff
- Promote and ensure adherence to evidence-based medical critical care nursing practice and applicable regulatory standards
- Support quality improvement initiatives focused on sepsis management, respiratory failure, infection prevention, ventilator-associated events, central line safety, and patient outcomes
- Collaborate with intensivists, hospitalists, respiratory therapy, pharmacy, nephrology, and ancillary teams to coordinate complex, multidisciplinary patient care
- Identify and address operational or clinical issues that may impact safe care delivery in real time; escalate significant events, near misses, adverse events, and patient/family concerns promptly
- In the absence of the Nurse Manager, assume leadership accountability for unit operations, staff oversight, and patient care continuity
Required Qualifications
- Baccalaureate Degree in Nursing (BSN) preferred; candidates without a BSN must obtain one within three (3) years of hire
- Current, active Registered Nurse (RN) licensure in the District of Columbia
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification through the American Heart Association required
- Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) certification through the American Heart Association required
- Minimum one (1) year of supervisory or nursing leadership experience required
- National specialty certification (e.g., CCRN or equivalent critical care certification) required within one (1) year of hire
- Strong knowledge of critical care protocols, rapid response systems, and patient safety standards
- Demonstrated leadership, emotional intelligence, and conflict resolution skills
Preferred Qualifications
- Minimum two (2) years of bedside RN experience in a Critical Care or Medical ICU setting
- Experience managing ventilated patients, invasive hemodynamic monitoring, vasoactive infusions, continuous renal replacement therapy (CRRT), and multi-organ dysfunction

Pay & Schedule
This is a full-time, exempt position. Salary range: $84,680 – $135,488 annually, commensurate with experience and qualifications.
