Job Description
The schedule for this position is three 12-hour shifts per week from 7:00 am to 7:00 pm; one weekend every 6 weeks, with one summer holiday and one winter holiday.
This is a full-time position that will demonstrate competency in delivery of quality patient care to patients ranging in age from children to geriatrics. The staff nurse is responsible for developing and implementing a plan of care in accordance with the patients’ express wishes and in full compliance with the Nurse Practice Act and agency policy, procedure and standards of care.
Responsibilities
- Assess physical environment/safety needs of patient.
- Develop, coordinate, and implement a plan of care in collaboration with patients, their significant others, and members of the interdisciplinary group (IDG) that focuses on the holistic needs of patient. Provide in-patient facility nursing care according to the plan of care.
- Administer and document the administration of medications according to physician’s orders.
- Accurately account for narcotics at the beginning and end of each shift.
- Have a thorough understanding of the facility’s policies and procedures for emergency situations and be able to delegate and perform tasks during practice drills to demonstrate this knowledge.
- Collaborate with physicians, other health care providers, and IDG members and make timely reports of pertinent information to appropriate health care professionals.
- Complete accurate and timely documentation of nursing assessments, interventions, and updates to plan of care according to the nursing standards of this agency.
- Delegate tasks and supervise LPNs and Certified Nursing Assistants in the Hospice Home and document supervision according to agency policy.
- Provide patients and their significant others with appropriate education to support safe care of the patients in the Hospice Home and in accordance with their current plan of care.
- Monitor and manage the appropriate use of patients’ medical equipment and supplies.
- Participate in own professional development by maintaining required competencies, identifying learning needs and seeking appropriate assistance or educational offerings.
- Actively participate in the orientation and training of new employees and visiting students of all disciplines.
- Maintain patient confidentiality at all times.
- Perform other duties as assigned by supervisor.

Requirements
- Registered Nurse with current NC license; BSN preferred.
- Current CPR certification.
- Hospice and/or skilled nursing home, hospital or healthcare facility experience preferred.
- Hospice Nurse Certification preferred.
- Able to independently seek out resources and work collaboratively
- Able to communicate clearly with patients, families, visitors, IDG team, physicians, facility staff, leadership and others
- Able to teach patients and families in accordance with the nursing plan of care
- Knowledgeable about reimbursement sources, Medicare regulations, licensing laws, and accreditation standards.
- Competent computer skills.
- Must have reliable transportation.
- Must be able to work on a shift basis.
- May be required to lift and/or carry items up to 50 pounds.
- Must have sensory abilities to complete physical assessment, communicate with patient/family care providers and physician and to complete the reporting and follow-up documentation responsibilities of the job.
- Workdays and scheduled hours with weekend and holiday commitments as outlined in Employee Information Agreement.
Environmental Factors
- Tasks with potential for exposure to blood borne pathogens.
- May be potentially exposed to communicable diseases or bodily fluids.
- Subject to varying and unpredictable situations in the Hospice Home Environment.
