Job DescriptionJob Summary: Assisting in the care and treatment of consumers in a short term residential treatment facility for mental illness or chemical dependency. Under general supervision of program supervisor or clinician/nurse provides supportive and behavioral direction as dictated by consumer needs and treatment plan.

Consumer Care
- Responsible for providing a variety of support services in a residential setting to assist with the supervision and safety of individuals through a recovery rehabilitative focus of care;
- Communicates and treats consumers with respect, dignity and tact;
- Maintains a friendly, positive, courteous attitude and demeanor;
- Demonstrates concern for and understanding of the consumer’s situation and perspective;
- Orients consumer to unit and to unit schedule / guidelines upon admission;
- Engage consumers in conversation or other interaction or recreation (table games) when appropriate;
- Escorts or transports consumers to specified location and provides personal protection as needed;
- Monitors consumers at all times performing hourly and as needed rounds;
- Monitors vital signs per protocol;
- Reports any consumer abnormalities or changes in status in timely manner;
- Takes vital signs, and/or draws blood or collects other bodily fluids, as directed by a physician or nurse;
- Observes and documents patient data, behavior and activity;
- Maintains accurate and timely documentation;
- Conducts activities for recreation and socialization;
- Assists RN / LPN as needed / requested.
Consumer Treatment Plan
- Participate in implementing treatment plans by;
- monitoring patients’ progress;
- communicating information regarding patients’ behavior to other members of treatment team;
- facilitates or co-facilitates groups, community meetings, or drug or alcohol education groups;
- encouraging and facilitating patients’ participation in therapeutic activities;
- supervising patients to ensure their safety and their involvement in treatment;
- Maintain patient, program, department and related documentation;
- Provide guidance and information to consumers around the daily activities.
Housekeeping/Hygiene
- Assists with consumer’s personal and safety needs, housekeeping cleaning duties.
- Responsible for assisting with laundering bed linens used in the facility by consumers
- Assist consumers in the laundering of their personal clothes and items during assigned laundry times.
- Provide guidance to consumers in proper upkeep of living quarters, personal hygiene and grooming, appropriate attire, attendance at meals, and participation in other support service activities.

Intake
- Assists with admission / discharge or transfer process in accordance with policies of facility and unit guidelines / expectations;
- Assists with body search and collects urine specimens, labels and secures properly;
- Performs inventory of consumer belongings (on admit / discharge or transfer) in accordance with Policies;
- Orients consumer to unit and to unit schedule / guidelines upon admission;
- Maintains safety and security on unit at all times.
Required Knowledge & Skills:
Ability to assist with admissions in accordance with policies of the facility
Ability to collect bodily fluids
Ability to perform a variety of routine tasks such as orientation to facility, assisting with consumer’s personal and safety needs, and monitoring of consumers at all times
Ability to perform CPR
Ability to take consumer vital signs
Ability to use agency specific documentation software
Ability to identify and report any adverse side effects of medication to physician
Ability to identify patient limitations.
Ability to chart client’s behavior.
Ability to recognize significant changes in patient’s behavior.
Ability to assess client’s needs.
Ability to answer patient questions.
Ability to troubleshoot signal if necessary
Ability to provide simple nursing care, personal care and hygiene
Ability to explain procedures to patients.
Ability to assist medical doctors with patients if patients are non-compliant.
Ability to lead activities.
Ability to document patient’s behavior accurately
Ability to perform established treatment and programmatic activities.
Ability to check equipment to ensure it is working properly.
Knowledge of code protocols.
Knowledge of the department, facility or service entity’s policies and procedures.
Knowledge of simple nursing care, first-aid and personal and environmental hygiene.
Knowledge of the various types of appropriate recreational activities.
Knowledge of the concepts of mental health, health disorders and related physical conditions and treatment approaches.
Knowledge of facility safety policies and procedures.
Knowledge of care plans and diagnosis.

Required Education & Experience: 6 months of experience in a helping field. High School Diploma or GED.
Supervisory Responsibilities: None
Work Environment:
This job operates in a professional office environment. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets and fax machines. Some minor travel between Gateway sites is required.
Physical Demands:
The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.
Employee is frequently required to walk, sit, stand or kneel and occasionally required to climb or balance and stoop. Employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 15 pounds. Must have the ability to sit for long periods of time at a computer. Employee frequently uses fine hand/eye coordination, hearing and visual acuity. Lighting and temperature are adequate, and there are not hazardous or unpleasant condition caused by noise, dust, etc. Employee must be able to travel between Gateway sites.
