Job Summary:
We are seeking a highly skilled and patient-focused Sedation Nurse to join our Urology Clinic team. The Sedation Nurse is responsible for the administration and monitoring of moderate sedation during urologic procedures, ensuring patient safety, comfort, and compliance with all regulatory guidelines. This role requires clinical expertise, critical thinking, and the ability to respond quickly in a procedural environment.
Key Responsibilities:
- Assess patients pre-procedure to determine sedation eligibility, including reviewing medical history, current medications, allergies, and vital signs.
- Administer moderate (conscious) sedation under the direction of a physician during urologic procedures such as cystoscopy, prostate biopsy, vasectomy, or stent placements.
- Monitor and document patients’ vital signs and level of consciousness throughout the sedation process using appropriate monitoring equipment.
- Recognize and respond to adverse reactions, complications, or changes in patient condition promptly.
- Provide post-procedural care, including recovery monitoring and patient education regarding post-sedation care and discharge instructions.
- Maintain accurate and detailed documentation in the electronic medical record (EMR).
- Ensure all sedation-related equipment and emergency supplies are available, functional, and comply with safety and infection control standards.
- Collaborate closely with urologists, surgical technicians, and other clinical team members to ensure smooth and safe procedures.
- Participate in sedation policy development, training, and quality assurance activities as needed.
Qualifications:
- Registered Nurse (RN) or Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) with advanced certification as permitted by state scope of practice.
- Current state nursing license (RN or LPN, depending on facility requirements).
- ACLS and BLS certification required (PALS may be required for pediatric settings).
- Minimum 2 years of clinical experience, preferably in procedural sedation, critical care, or perioperative nursing.
- Prior experience in urology, endoscopy, or outpatient procedural care strongly preferred.
- Excellent assessment, monitoring, and emergency response skills.
- Familiarity with sedation medications, dosing, and reversal agents.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills with a calm, reassuring presence.
Work Environment:
- Fast-paced outpatient urology clinic or ambulatory surgical center.
- Frequent use of monitoring and sedation equipment.
- Requires standing for long periods, moving patients, and responding to emergencies.
