Job Description

Utility / Power SCADA / DCS Engineer - Subject Matter Expert

Location: (Flexible)
Department: Engineering / Controls & Automation

Industry background is important: Power Utility, Power Generation, Turbine Balance of Plant, Relaying, Transmission and Distribution.

Ideal candidate has experience working for the following employers: Prime Controls, RoviSys, Process HVAC Solutions, GE Vernova, Burns & McDonnell, Duke Energy, Telvent, Westinghouse, Emerson, and similar firms.

Candidate must be able to develop, from scratch, a Turbine Balance of Plant Sequence of Operations and Startup sequence.

Position Summary

The Utility / Power SCADA / DCS Ovation Engineer – SME is responsible for the design, implementation, commissioning, and long-term support of Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) and DCS systems supporting electric utility and power generation operations. This role supports mission-critical power and infrastructure environments, requiring deep technical ownership to ensure SCADA and DCS platforms deliver high reliability, availability, security, and performance.

This is a heavy-lift, hands-on SME role. The ideal candidate has been immersed in utility and power generation control systems and can independently develop complex operational logic, sequences, and control philosophies—not simply configure existing templates. Strong experience in utility automation, industrial communications, and control systems engineering is required, along with the ability to operate confidently in high-stakes operational environments.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design, configure, test, and commission utility SCADA and DCS systems for real-time monitoring, control, and data acquisition in power and utility environments.

  • Develop and maintain SCADA and DCS applications including HMI graphics, alarm management, sequencing logic, trending, reporting, and historian integration.

  • Develop control philosophies, Sequences of Operations (SOO), and startup/shutdown logic from first principles, including turbine Balance of Plant (BOP) sequences and startup sequences for power generation systems.

  • Integrate SCADA/DCS platforms with RTUs, PLCs, IEDs, protection relays, turbine controls, telemetry devices, and field instrumentation.

  • Implement and support industrial communication protocols such as DNP3, Modbus, IEC 61850, and OPC UA/DA.

  • Collaborate with electrical, controls, networking, and IT teams to ensure seamless system integration and operational performance.

  • Support SCADA/DCS network architecture design, redundancy strategies, disaster recovery, and system scalability.

  • Troubleshoot complex system failures, perform root-cause analysis, and implement corrective and preventive actions in live operational environments.

  • Support plant and utility operations staff with real-time monitoring, system upgrades, incident response, and operational optimization.

  • Ensure compliance with utility standards, cybersecurity requirements (NERC CIP / OT security best practices), and operational procedures.

  • Produce and maintain technical documentation including system architecture diagrams, configuration records, test procedures, operating manuals, and SOO documentation.

  • Support FAT, SAT, field commissioning, and provide technical guidance and training to end users and operational personnel.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or a related technical discipline.

  • 5+ years of hands-on experience working with utility SCADA, DCS, or operational technology (OT) systems in power or infrastructure environments.

  • Demonstrated ability to independently design and implement complex control logic and operational sequences, not just configure existing systems.

  • Hands-on experience with SCADA/DCS platforms such as Emerson Ovation, Ignition, GE iFIX/CIMPLICITY, Wonderware, Schneider, or similar systems.

  • Strong understanding of industrial networking, communications infrastructure, and OT cybersecurity principles.

  • Proven experience supporting high-availability, mission-critical control systems.

  • Excellent troubleshooting, analytical, and problem-solving skills.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in electric utility, power generation (thermal, combined cycle, renewables), water/wastewater, or gas environments.

  • Familiarity with electrical distribution systems, substation automation, turbine systems, and protection schemes.

  • Experience with historian platforms and data integration for operational reporting and analytics.

  • Professional certifications related to SCADA, DCS, industrial networking, or cybersecurity.

Work Environment

This role involves a combination of office-based engineering, field commissioning, and direct collaboration with operations personnel. Travel may be required to support system deployment, testing, commissioning, or troubleshooting at utility or power generation sites.

SME Litmus Test (Internal / Screening Guidance)

A qualified candidate must be capable of developing a Turbine Balance of Plant (BOP) Sequence of Operations and Startup Sequence from scratch. Candidates unable to perform this level of independent control logic and operational design should not be considered for this role.
