Home Care Speech Therapist (ST / SLP)
Speech-Language Pathologists in home care focus on rehabilitating communication and swallowing disorders for patients recovering from strokes, surgeries, or neurological conditions.
- Assessment & Evaluation: Conducting in-home evaluations of speech, language, cognitive-communication, and swallowing (dysphagia) abilities.
- Therapeutic Intervention: Implementing personalized care plans to improve articulation, fluency, voice, and language comprehension.
- Swallowing Therapy: Providing safe-swallow training, recommending diet modifications, and teaching exercises to prevent aspiration.
- Patient/Family Education: Training caregivers on communication techniques and safety protocols to ensure continuity of care between visits.
- Care Coordination: Collaborating with physicians, nurses, and physical therapists to update the patient's holistic care plan.
Requirements:
- Education: SLPs require a Masters degree and state licensure; STNAs require a high school diploma and state-approved training.
- Certifications: CPR and First Aid certifications are standard requirements for all home care professionals.
- Skills: High empathy, physical stamina for patient transfers, and strong documentation skills are essential.
Skills for Home Health:
Independence: Self-motivated professionals capable of managing their own schedules and making autonomous clinical decisions in ambiguous situations.
- Physical & Mental Agility: Critical thinking for problem-solving in non-clinical settings and the stamina for frequent travel between patient homes.
Essential Skills & Environment:
- Autonomy & Travel: Work independently, traveling between homes, often requiring schedule flexibility.
- Collaboration: Strong communication skills to work within an interdisciplinary team.
- Problem-Solving: Differentiate urgent from non-urgent situations and manage varied patient needs.
- Technical Skills: Proficiency with required technology for documentation and communication.
- Technology Proficiency: Experience with electronic medical record (EMR) systems (e.g., Kinnser, HomeCare HomeBase) is standard for mobile documentation.
