Role Overview
We are seeking a Job Captain to serve as a core production contributor on multifamily residential and mixed-use projects. Working under the direction of a Project Manager or Senior Job Captain, the Job Captain executes the majority of design development and construction documentation work on assigned projects — producing accurate, coordinated, and code-compliant drawing sets that form the backbone of project delivery. This role requires strong drafting proficiency, a thorough understanding of building systems and construction standards, and the ability to work alongside peers and junior staff to keep documentation moving and quality high.
Key Responsibilities
Documentation & Technical
- Prepare, review, and check construction document sets across design development and CD phases, including floor plans, elevations, building sections, wall sections, and architectural details
- Coordinate architectural drawings with structural, MEP, civil, and landscape consultants; identify and flag conflicts to the Project Manager or Senior Job Captain for resolution
- Apply working knowledge of CBC, Title 24, ADA, and relevant local codes to ensure drawing sets are accurate and compliant throughout all phases
- Demonstrate thorough knowledge of architectural detailing and building systems — including lighting, HVAC, structural, plumbing, fire protection, and electrical
Project Coordination & Administration
- Assist in organizing permit packages, coordinating building department submissions, and tracking outstanding items under direction of senior staff
- Support construction administration including RFI responses, shop drawing review, and submittal tracking
- Participate in field survey efforts for as-built documentation; verify existing conditions and document discrepancies accurately
- Maintain organized project files throughout all phases, including drawing logs, revision histories, and consultant correspondence
Team Coordination & Professional Development
- Collaborate with production team members, designers, and consultants to keep drawing sets coordinated and schedules on track
- Work alongside Designer 1 and Designer 2 staff on assigned tasks, providing drawing direction and answering technical questions
- Participate in team meetings, internal drawing reviews, and QC checks; incorporate feedback from senior staff into revised work
- Actively pursue AXP hours and work toward licensure with the support of firm mentors
Qualifications
Required
- Degree in Architecture from an accredited institution
- 5-7 years of experience in a professional architecture office with demonstrated experience producing construction documents on multifamily residential or mixed-use projects
- Advanced proficiency in Revit and AutoCAD; working knowledge of Microsoft Office
- Working knowledge of CBC, ADA, Title 24, and relevant building codes
- Strong attention to detail and ability to manage a high volume of technical drawing work accurately and efficiently
- Effective communication skills and ability to coordinate with team members, consultants, and agency reviewers
Preferred
- Licensed Architect in California or actively pursuing ARE licensure
- Experience coordinating permit submittals and plan check corrections through California building departments
- Familiarity with architectural specifications
- Exposure to SketchUp or other 3D tools for coordination and design review support
