Job Description

Policy Technical Writer

11 week contract w/ option to extend

Hybrid - Austin, TX

Overview

We are seeking a Policy Technical Writer to support identifying documentation gaps, building structured and scalable knowledge systems, and partnering across teams to improve operational maturity.

This individual will play a key role in audit readiness, policy development, and process standardization, helping translate day-to-day operations into clear documentation, workflows, and governance practices. This is an 11 week contract to start, so this could be a great fit for someone looking for a short term project, but there is opportunity to extend into the new fiscal year if funding gets approved.

Responsibilities

  • Assess current-state documentation, identify gaps, and build out comprehensive documentation across IT, operations, and business workflows
  • Support audit readiness efforts by organizing, maintaining, and updating documentation for internal and external audits (e.g., policies, procedures, asset management)
  • Partner with cross-functional teams (IT, security, networking, helpdesk) to gather requirements and document processes
  • Conduct stakeholder interviews to understand workflows and translate them into clear SOPs, process maps, and policies
  • Develop and maintain documentation within tools such as SharePoint, Scribe, or other documentation platforms
  • Help define and standardize helpdesk policies, access/permissions processes, and internal operational procedures
  • Assist with asset management documentation and lifecycle tracking
  • Collaborate with networking teams on documenting updates related to firewalls, Cisco infrastructure, and system changes (non-hands-on)
  • Build and improve workflows, prioritization frameworks, and documentation governance practices
  • Support emerging initiatives such as AI policy development and documentation for responsible usage and data retention
  • Ensure documentation remains current and consistent with bi-annual audit requirements and organizational changes

Qualifications

  • 3+ years of experience in process documentation, compliance support, IT operations, or a related role
  • Experience supporting audit readiness efforts and working within structured compliance environments (SOC 2, ISO, NIST, or similar preferred)
  • Strong documentation skills, including creating SOPs, workflows, process maps, and policies
  • Proven ability to interview stakeholders and translate business processes into clear, structured documentation
  • Experience working with documentation and collaboration tools (e.g., SharePoint, Scribe, or similar platforms)
  • Familiarity with IT operations concepts such as access/permissions management, helpdesk processes, and asset tracking
  • Exposure to cross-functional environments, working with IT, security, and networking teams
  • Strong organizational and prioritization skills with the ability to manage multiple initiatives simultaneously
  • Comfortable operating in ambiguous environments and driving timelines independently
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills

Nice to Have:

  • Exposure to AI governance or policy development
  • Understanding of identity and access management (IAM) concepts
  • Experience with DocTract, and Scribe
