Job Overview:

The Youth Services Librarian is a full-time position (40 hours per week) at the Mildred G. Fields Memorial Library, located at 1075-A East Van Hook Street, Milan, TN. This role is responsible for developing, coordinating, and delivering library services and programs for children and teens, in accordance with the library’s policies and procedures. The starting pay range is $13.00–$15.00 per hour, based on qualifications and experience.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Plan and lead weekly storytimes for children.

  • Develop and execute educational programs for children and youth of all ages.

  • Organize and manage the library’s Summer Reading Program.

  • Engage with local schools, childcare centers, and assisted living facilities for outreach initiatives.

  • Facilitate the library's 1000 Books Before Kindergarten program.

  • Assist with the selection and acquisition of children’s and youth-related materials.

  • Develop and recommend policies and procedures for the library’s youth services.

  • Create training materials for in-house use as needed.

  • Compile statistics and reports for the department as required.

  • Provide cross-training and help at the circulation desk as necessary.

  • Ensure adherence to library policies and procedures.

  • Participate in professional development through workshops and training.

  • Perform general circulation duties.

  • Assist in managing the library’s social media presence.

  • Handle phone inquiries as needed.

  • Participate in regional youth services programs.

  • Plan and lead homeschool programs, including STEM and Lego activities.

  • Supervise and coordinate the Teen Advisory Board.

  • Perform other duties as assigned by supervisors.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Strong customer service skills with a professional and courteous approach.

  • Excellent verbal and written communication abilities.

  • Proficiency in Windows, Microsoft Office Suite, Google Drive, Canva, and internet research.

  • Familiarity with children’s and young adult literature, including current authors and trends.

  • Ability to learn and apply professional library principles and practices.

  • Strong organizational and time management skills; ability to prioritize effectively.

  • Capable of operating basic office equipment.

  • Open to constructive criticism and feedback.

  • Able to work both independently and as part of a team.

  • Basic math skills (including handling money and making change).

Education, Experience, and Training:

  • Preferred: College degree in a children’s services-related field.

  • Required: High school diploma or equivalent.

  • Highly preferred: Experience working with youth of all ages.

  • Library experience is highly desired.

  • A valid driver’s license and reliable transportation are required.

Physical and Mental Requirements:

Physical:

  • Ability to stand for extended periods.

  • Capable of lifting books and other library materials up to 45 lbs.

  • Regular use of computer keyboards requiring hand-eye coordination and finger dexterity.

  • Ability to stay focused with regular interruptions.

  • Tolerance for the minimal noise associated with children’s activities.

  • Ability to handle odors from people, materials, and the library environment.

  • Comfortable working in varying temperature conditions.

Mental:

  • Must be flexible, creative, and patient.

  • Ability to work evenings and weekends as required.

  • Capable of working with a diverse range of individuals in various settings.
