Animal Care Technician – In Vivo
Join Alpha Preclinical in vivo team as we bridge our client's research needs to reach the clinic and leverage our expertise using a personalized interface approach. Our goal is to strategically partner with our clients by reliably providing well-executed and cost-effective studies conducted in a timely manner to support their innovative drug development and research programs.
We are seeking an individual with contract research organization (CRO) experience and self-motivated Animal Care Technician to join our rapidly growing team. In this role you will contribute to the company’s contracted study life cycle and execute client projects and programs. Specifically, you will be part of our cross-functional team executing support of in vivo studies responsibilities to advance our clients research and development (R&D) programs.
This role is a unique opportunity to join an early-stage, CRO startup. Animal Care Technicians work under direct supervision of the Animal Care Program Supervisor and general guidance of veterinarians, researchers, and senior management. Animal Care Technicians perform animal husbandry, facility operational procedures, and may assist with performing in vivo animal procedures and in vitro laboratory procedures. This position is full-time within a laboratory on-site at our facilities located in Worcester, MA.
Key Responsibilities:
• Performs animal husbandry duties (feeding, watering, health checks, cage cleaning, enrichment) for all animals housed within the facility.
• Observes, records, and reports atypical findings to Animal Care Program Supervisor and assigned Study Director.
• Assists with the administration of supportive or clinical care treatments of animals with veterinary clinical care needs, minor injuries, emergency separations, and euthanasia.
• Disinfects and sanitizes vivarium and associated procedure areas and follows disease control protocols for laboratory and animal facilities.
• Maintains animal room records, including animal identification and room conditions.
• Operates and maintains cleaning, disinfection and sanitation equipment (e.g. cleaning utensils, autoclave, cage washer, handheld sanitizer).
• Responsible for proper waste and biohazardous waste disposal.
• Performs and records laboratory equipment tests at proper intervals (e.g. cage washer testing, eye wash station, safety showers, storage unit temperatures).
• Prepares animal cage set ups for operational needs.
• Receives and distributes procured animals.
• May prepare animal or sample shipment packages for delivery.
• May work under the direction of Animal Care Program Supervisor or research/scientific personnel for breeding and colony management or contract research studies.
• May assist in the set-up of procedure rooms or laboratory experiments with all necessary supplies, materials and equipment required for projects.
• Performs other related duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications:
• AS in Veterinary Technology or related field; HS degree with 2+ years of experience; AALAS certification preferred.
• Proficiently handles rodent species.
• Familiar with Microsoft Office Suite and electronic laboratory notebooking systems is preferred.
• Demonstrated ability to communicate (verbal and written) well with personnel.
• Must be able to lift 50 lbs.
