ICU/PCU Unit

  • Beds: 10 ICU, 21 PCU
  • Nurse:Patient Ratio:
    • ICU: 2:1 (normal), 3:1 (stretch)
    • PCU: 3:1 (normal), 4:1 (stretch)
  • Required Certifications: BLS, ACLS, NIHSS
  • Common Diagnoses:
    COVID-19, respiratory failure, cardiac arrest, sepsis, DKA
  • Required Skills/Experience:
    Ventilator management, cath lab recovery, therapeutic hypothermia
  • Drip Titration: Yes
    • Common Drips: Propofol, Versed, Fentanyl, Precedex, Levophed, Epinephrine, Vasopressin, Dopamine, Dobutamine, Bumex, Insulin, Amiodarone
  • Leadership:
    • Charge Nurse: 24 hrs (may take assignment)
    • House Supervisor: 1500–0700
  • Support Staff:
    • Nurse Aides: PCU 1:8, rarely in ICU
    • Respiratory Therapy: 24/7
  • Providers:
    • Intensivist: 0800–1500
    • Hospitalist: 24 hrs
  • Equipment: Ventilators, CPAP/BiPAP, High-flow oxygen
  • Monitoring: Remote monitor techs; RNs read their own telemetry strips
  • Shifts: 12-hour shifts, centralized scheduling
  • Weekend: Every other weekend
  • Holidays: Rotated with permanent staff
  • Call/Standby: None
  • Floating:
    • Med/Surg/Tele (1:5)
    • Telemetry (1:4–5)
    • ED boarding
    • PCU (1:3–4)
  • Scrubs: Any professional color allowed
