Job Description

Job Description A day in this role

Picture your morning: you calibrate your instruments, load the airflow hood and manometer, and head to a busy job site. By mid-morning, you’re reviewing plans and control sequences, verifying design airflows, and fine-tuning dampers. After lunch, you’re setting pump speeds, measuring coil temperatures, and documenting readings for a polished TAB report. Before day’s end, you sync up with the project manager, the mechanical contractor, and the commissioning agent to resolve a field discrepancy—ensuring the system performs exactly as designed.

What you’ll do

  • Test, adjust, and balance commercial and residential HVAC systems—both air and hydronic—to meet performance and comfort targets aligned with design specifications.
  • Measure and tune airflow, pressure, and temperature across fans, diffusers, dampers, pumps, and coils.
  • Deploy specialized instruments including manometers, airflow hoods, anemometers, tachometers, and flow meters to validate system operation.
  • Interpret mechanical drawings, blueprints, and specifications, along with air distribution schematics and control sequences.
  • Record readings, deficiencies, and final settings; compile clear, complete TAB reports.
  • Spot and communicate issues—improper installs, control faults, or design deviations—and propose corrective actions.
  • Collaborate closely with project managers, mechanical contractors, and commissioning agents to close out punch items and align results to design.
  • Maintain, calibrate, and safeguard test equipment on a regular schedule.
  • Execute work in accordance with NEBB, AABC, or TABB standards, as applicable.
  • Follow all company and job site safety procedures and policies.

  • Technical strengths: Proficiency with airflow/pressure testing tools; solid understanding of HVAC operation and controls; strong blueprint and duct/piping layout reading skills.
  • Soft skills: Detail-driven, analytical, and thorough documentation; clear communicator; self-starter who can work independently and within a team.

Where you’ll work

  • Primarily in the field at construction sites, existing buildings, and industrial facilities.
  • Travel to multiple job locations as needed; occasional overtime or weekend work may be required.
