JOB SUMMARY:

Under the supervision of a licensed veterinarian, performs duties associated with the collection, processing, documentation, and transport of biologic samples from horses racing in meets across the state of Kentucky. Also performs other duties as required.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES:

· Performs equine biological sampling (blood, urine and/or hair) as directed by Kentucky Horse Racing and Gaming personnel that are responsible for regulating the safety and integrity of racing, such as Veterinarians, Stewards or Judges.

· Prepare all testing equipment and supplies prior to each sample collection session.

· Performs administrative tasks and completes documentation associated with equine biologic sample collections as directed by the corporation veterinarian.

· Processes equine biologic samples for retention or transfer to the official drug testing laboratory as directed by the corporation veterinarian.

· Assess each horse's behavior to determine the most effective and safe method for collecting the required samples while also recognizing situations that could affect urine/blood collection from the horse.

· Maintain the test barn collection stalls, office and lab, as well as clean and disinfect water buckets with additional cleaning and organizing as needed.

· Alert the veterinarian to any horse cooling out in the test barn with overt signs of injury/lameness.

· Monitor, educate, and assist human test barn attendees in following the rules and procedures of the test barn.

· Performs other duties as assigned

REQUIREMENTS OF A SUCCESSFUL CANDIDATE

· Ability to travel, including overnight stays.

· Strong communication, organization and time management skills.

· Works well in a team setting.

· Ability to work independently.

· Must be available to work a flexible and rotating schedule, including nights, weekends, and holidays.

· Ability to lift, carry and or move objects, occasionally up to 50lbs.

· Ability to work in various weather conditions.

KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/EXPERIENCE:

· Associate's degree in veterinary technology

· KY state veterinary technician license or eligible

· Equine experience preferred

· Racetrack experience preferred

· Strong horse handling skills

· Valid driver’s license

COMPENSATION:

Annual compensation based on experience. KHRG employees participate in the Kentucky Employees Retirement System, and are eligible to participate in the Kentucky health, life, and deferred compensation programs.
