Reports to: Pathologist Assistant Manager
Yosemite Pathology (YP) is a private independent pathologist owned and operated surgical
pathology and cytology laboratory based in Modesto, CA. YP provides comprehensive state of
the art, reliable, and accurate diagnostic services to its physicians and major area hospitals in
the Alameda, Amador, Calaveras, Contra Costa, Kern, Mariposa, Merced, San Joaquin, Solano,
Stanislaus and Tuolumne counties.
YP offers a full spectrum of tissue pathology, cytology and histology services, including
examination of gynecologic specimens, body fluids and fine needle aspiration specimens. We
also offer an extensive array of special stains and immunohistochemistry to assist in the
management of oncologic and non-oncologic diseases. The laboratory is supported by highly
qualified Histotechnologist, Cytotechnologist, Technicians and office staff who offer excellent
service.
Summary/Objective
The Grossing Technician provides anatomic pathology services under the direction and
supervision of a Board Certified, licensed medical doctor (Pathologist). Grossing Technician is
required to gross and dictate gastrointestinal biopsies, small biopsies (including cores), prostate
cores, and any small tissue that does not require dissection. Grossing Technicians will interact
with pathologists in same manner that physicians' assistants carry out their duties under the
direction of physicians in surgical and medical practices.
The Grossing Technicians serves as the eyes of the pathologist and is often the initial (and
sometimes only) individual to look at the specimen when it arrives from the operating room,
clinic and/or physician's office. Grossing Technician's contribute to the overall efficiency of the
laboratory or pathology practice in a cost effective manner by performing a variety of tasks,
consisting primarily of gross examination of surgical pathology specimens.
Essential Functions
• Preparation, gross description, dictation and dissection of human tissue.
• Select representative sections for embedding, staining and microscopic evaluation.
• Ensures appropriate specimen accessioning.
• Photograph pertinent gross specimens as needed.
• Retrieve the patient's medical chart and other pertinent data for review with the attending
pathologist.
• Confer with the attending pathologist to identify any special techniques or procedures to
be utilized.
• Ensure the proper maintenance of equipment.
• Provision of adequate supplies.
• Cleaning of grossing stations.
• Disposal of biological and administrative waste.
• Solve any discrepancies or other issues that may arise.
Minimum Job Requirements
• Associates of Science degree in Biological Sciences or related field
• Basic knowledge of human anatomy, macro surgical techniques, and general laboratory
skills preferred
• Demonstrated ability to obtain and prepare tissue for evaluation and to provide
assistance to pathologists in a timely and quality manner.
• Proficiency in preparing and maintaining records and in use of electronic communications
tools and software.
• Knowledge/ability to become knowledgeable in voice recognition software, internet and
multiple-interfaced systems, various laboratory information systems, Excel, and MS Word
or equivalent applications.
• High degree of technical competence and knowledge of histological techniques.
• Experience that demonstrates strong interpersonal and customer service skills with the
ability to establish rapport with persons of diverse backgrounds which also includes
experience working with students, staff, and faculty, with a higher or lower education level
• Ability to interpret complex rules, regulations, policies, procedures, and guidelines
• Demonstrated ability to organize workload
• Must possess a professional demeanor and have experience that demonstrates problem
solving skills and the ability to manage multiple tasks and work independently with
minimal supervision
• Must be detail oriented, self-motivated, a fast learner and possess excellent time
management, organizational, written and verbal communication skills
• Ability to take direction and use independent judgment to coordinate and meet multiple
deadlines
• Familiarity with HIPAA and security compliance requirements

Compensation and Benefits:
• The compensation range is $52,000 – $85,000 annually. Final salary offer subject to
multiple factors including candidate experience and expertise, geographic location of the
role, and current market data.

Work Environment
This position operates in a laboratory environment and involves frequent standing and exposure
to hazardous chemicals and biohazardous materials.
Physical Demands

this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear. The employee frequently is required
to stand, walk, use hands to finger, handle or feel, and reach with hands and arms. The
employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up
to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision,
color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.
