Job DescriptionJob Title: Fabricator / Welder
Job Description
This role focuses on fabricating and fitting metal components in a job shop manufacturing environment using blueprints, bills of materials, and layout skills. You will interpret drawings, pull and prepare materials, create cut lists, and assemble parts into finished weldments, working primarily with hard steel, aluminum, and stainless materials. While the core of the position centers on fabrication and fitting, any additional welding and equipment experience you bring will make you even more valuable to the team.
Responsibilities
- Review job orders and bills of materials (BOM) to identify and pull all required parts and materials for each project, ranging from simple to complex assemblies.
- Interpret and read drawings and blueprints to understand dimensions, tolerances, and fabrication requirements for each job.
- Create accurate cut lists from blueprints, determining the correct lengths, widths, and angles needed for each piece.
- Lay out materials according to drawings, marking hole locations to be punched or drilled and ensuring precise measurements using a tape measure and other layout tools.
- Prepare parts for assembly by cutting, drilling, punching, and cleaning materials as needed prior to fit-up.
- Fit and assemble components into weldments, tack up assemblies, and verify that dimensions and alignment meet specifications.
- Work with various metals, including hard steel, aluminum, and stainless steel, ensuring proper handling and preparation for fabrication.
- Collaborate with welders, machine operators, and other team members, sharing information and assisting where needed to complete jobs efficiently.
- Use basic fabrication shop tools and equipment such as grinders, saws, and other hand and power tools to complete assigned tasks.
- Maintain a clean, safe, and organized work area, following all safety procedures and using required personal protective equipment.
- Work effectively in a job shop environment, handling a variety of custom and short-run projects with changing priorities.
- Support occasional work on stairs, stringers, pipefitting, and handrail or round pipe fitting as needed, depending on project requirements.
- Be available to work scheduled hours and occasional Saturdays based on workload and customer demands.
Essential Skills
- Proven fabricating and fitting experience in a metal fabrication or job shop environment.
- Strong ability to read and interpret blueprints, drawings, and bills of materials (BOM).
- Hands-on experience with layout work, including marking and measuring materials for cutting, drilling, and punching.
- Experience working with hard steel, aluminum, and stainless steel materials.
- Ability to create accurate cut lists from blueprints and translate them into precise fabricated parts.
- Comfort using common fabrication tools such as grinders, saws, and tape measures.
- Experience in a job shop setting, managing varied projects and adapting to changing priorities.
- Mechanical aptitude and strong attention to detail to ensure accurate fit-up and assembly.
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision while also collaborating effectively with a small team.
- Reliable attendance and willingness to work first shift and occasional Saturdays as required.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Experience with press brake, shearing, and punch press equipment.
- Background in grinding wheel operation, saw operation, and handrail or round pipe fitting.
- Experience with stairs and stringers fabrication is highly desired.
- Pipefitting experience in a fabrication environment.
- Exposure to flux core, MIG welding, and structural fabrication processes.
- Experience working with sheet metal and structural components.
- Formal certifications, apprenticeship training, or relevant technical degrees are considered strong pluses but are not required.
- Ability to set up welds and support welding operations, even though this specific role does not require primary welding responsibilities.
- Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to interpret and resolve fabrication challenges from drawings and field conditions.
Why Work Here?
You will join a flexible, laid-back, and autonomous environment where people work hard and support one another to get the job done. The organization offers a comprehensive benefits package including medical, dental, and vision coverage, with a 401(k) plan that features up to a 6% match plus additional profit sharing contributions. Employees benefit from profit sharing that is added to their retirement plan, paid holidays for all major holidays, and a generous vacation structure that grows with tenure—from 1 week in the first year, to 2 weeks at 2 years, 3 weeks at 5 years, and up to 5 weeks at 20 years. The culture emphasizes teamwork, mutual help, and long-term stability, providing a place where your skills are valued and your contributions are recognized.
Work Environment
This position is based in a job shop manufacturing environment with approximately 15 employees working on first shift. The schedule runs Monday through Friday from 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., with some Saturdays required from 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. depending on workload and work orders. The facility experiences seasonal temperature changes, becoming quite warm in the summer and colder in the winter, so comfort with a non-climate-controlled shop is important. You will work around typical fabrication equipment and tools such as grinders, saws, presses, and other metalworking machinery.
