The Clinical Nurse Supervisor / DON requires meeting high standards in the area of supervising the nursing department. Provides direction, coordination, and implantation of professional and supportive services to residents in the provision of healthcare.
Management:
1. Assumes responsibility for overseeing the total nursing care of all residents.
2. Ensures/monitors the accuracy of nursing care records.
3. Establishes/implements procedures for the provision of nursing care and the delegated medical care.
4. Ensures the development of nursing care policy and procedure manuals, and the availability of the manuals for all staff.
5. Implements systems to assure compliance with all state and federal local guidelines.
6. Participates with Educational Services in the planning of orientation programs for new nursing personnel, volunteers, temporary staff, and continuing in-service education for all nursing staff.
7. Introduces health services to new clients and families.
8. Determines, with the Executive team, the numbers and levels of nursing personnel to be employed.
9. Participates in the recruitment, selection and termination of nursing personnel.
10. Participates in the selection of prospective residents based on nursing care needs, and nursing personnel competencies available.
11. Creates effective working relationships amongst all staff, acting as liaison between nursing and other dept.
12. Develops positive working relationships with medical director, doctors, and community.
13. Participates in planning, decision making and budgeting for nursing care.
14. Ensures nursing department stays within budget while maintaining high quality resident care.
15. Ensures staff and family concerns are effectively resolved.
16. Coordinates and directs staff and facility meetings.
17. Establishes working relationship with Hospice vendor to assure residents needs are met.
18. Develops long-range plans for the nursing department, in conjunction with the Executive team, based on social, economic, political and technological changes.
19. Cooperates in developing and implementing an interdisciplinary approach to health care services.
20. Assumes responsibility from the Executive Director as assigned.
Resident Care:
1. Monitors residents to ensure optimum care.
2. Answers resident call lights when needed.
3. Participates in admission and discharge process as needed; assures all necessary nursing admission papers and requirements are completed.
4. Maintains contact with physicians regarding residents’ care needs.
5. Assures that a comprehensive plan of care is established and implemented for each resident, and that the plan of care is reviewed at least quarterly and within seven (7) days of the revision of the comprehensive assessment.
6. Assures order and cleanliness of nursing units.
7. Assists with resident care as time allows oral feeding, treatments, medication, one-to-one time and wound care.
8. Is a part of facility Safety and Quality assurance meetings.
9. Ensures coordination of nursing services for the residents with other resident care services provided both within and outside of Assisted Living.
10. Interacts with physicians to plan of care for residents.
11. Assures that discharge and transfer planning for residents is conducted.
12. Ensures resident rights are protected and standards of care are maintained.
13. Assures all documentation is monitored to ensure compliance with standards.
14. Ensures care plans are updated.
15. Reviews all incident reports.
16. Prepares for doctor's rounds.
17. Assists doctor during his\her rounds.
18. Completes discharge summaries.
Supervision:
1. Ensure staff development with training and orientation programs to ensure competency of staff and to meet regulatory requirements.
2. Maintains and promotes a positive attitude.
3. Delegates responsibilities and follow-up so that work is done in an effective and efficient manner.
4. Supervises employees within the dept., which may include coaching employees, terminating employees.
5. Delegates and monitors non-nursing responsibilities to other staff consistent with their training, experience, competence and legal authorization and within policy guidelines.
6. Assigns, supervises and evaluates the performance of all nursing personnel.
7. Ensures that evaluations occur for each nursing employee at least annually.
Safety/Compliance:
1. Accepts and follows through with all policies and procedures.
2. Identifies and corrects hazards and unsafe acts and reports all quality issues.
3. Is aware of and adheres to all HIPAA regulations.
4. Adheres to policies on infection control, safety and resident rights.
5. Completes all Educare and other training required.
6. Participates in facility QAPI, Quality Assurance Performance Improvement program and activities.
Knowledge and Skills:
1. Able to communicate effectively with relatives of residents and promotes a homelike atmosphere on the unit.
2. Able to work with other departments in furthering the team concept of Long-Term Care and the Customer Service Initiatives.
3. Able to demonstrate an ability to assess the physical, emotional, spiritual, and psycho-social status of the residents and to plan and implement nursing care.
4. Able to maintain confidential information.
5. Ability to prioritize tasks.
6. Ability to focus all efforts on quality resident care.
7. Awareness of all moral and legal implications of the Patient’s and Residents’ Bill of Rights and Vulnerable Adult Act.
8. Basic computer hardware and software knowledge to include basic Word and Excel.
9. Current knowledge of state and federal regulations.
10. Excellent oral and written communication skills.
11. Skills in problem definition and resolution.
12. Working knowledge of all applicable reimbursement systems
Required Experience and Education:
1. Currently registered and licensed as an RN for at least 3-5 years.
2. Current CPR certification.
3. Previous experience in Nursing Administration and Supervision
4. Experience in Assisted Living facility.
