- Level I Pediatric Trauma Center
- Teaching Hospital
- Chest Pain Center
- Certified Stroke Center
- Congenital Cardiology ranked #7 by U.S. News & World Report
- Radius Rule: Travelers must reside at least 50 miles from the facility
Unit Overview
- Unit Size: 20 beds
- Two mirrored sides with 10 beds each
- Centralized nurse station; highest-acuity patients located closest
- Experience Required:
- Minimum 2 years of Pediatric Cardiac ICU experience in a similar high-acuity setting
- First-Time Travelers: Accepted
Patient Population
- Ages: 0–18 years
- High-acuity cardiac patients, including:
- Congenital heart conditions (post-surgical and medical management)
- Pre- and post-transplant care
- Post–cardiac catheterization
- Advanced therapies and devices:
- Ventricular Assist Devices (VAD)
- ECMO, Impella
- Dialysis, Aquadex (renal replacement therapy)
Staffing Ratios
- RN: Based on acuity (2:1, 1:1, or 1:2)
- Support Staff:
- 1 Healthcare Technician per day (unit support, patient care assistance)
- Unit Secretary each shift
Required Licensure & Certifications
- BLS (Basic Life Support)
- PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support)
- NIHSS (Stroke Scale Certification)
Required Skills
- Care of fresh post-operative open-heart patients
- Pediatric transplant experience preferred
- Experience with: ECMO, Impella, Aquadex
- EPIC EMR proficiency (required)
- Ability to float to PICU (discussed during interview)
Department Support
- Charge Nurse (non-assigned/floating)
- Resource Nurse (floating)
- Respiratory Therapy – 24/7
- Cardiologist – 24/7
- Intensivist – 24/7
- IV/Vascular Access Team available
- In-house Phlebotomy (limited use due to central lines)
- Monitoring: Centralized and bedside (no telemetry tech)
Technology & Equipment
- EMR: EPIC
- IV Pumps: Alaris
- Medication Dispensing: Omnicell
- Monitors: Philips
Floating Requirements
- Required to float as needed to:
- PICU
- NICU
- General Pediatrics
Orientation
- New Employee Orientation (NEO)
- 2 days of unit-specific orientation
Scheduling
- Shift Length: 12 hours (36 hours/week)
- Shift Times: 18:30 – 06:30 (Night Shift)
- Schedule Cycle: Every 6 weeks
- Weekend Rotation:
- 3–4 weekends per 6 weeks (Friday–Sunday)
- On-Call: Not required
- Holidays:
- Travelers work 75% of holidays
- Time Off (RTO): Requires manager approval
