Job DescriptionAbout DC ScholarsDC Scholars Public Charter School was founded in 2012 and serves approximately 500 students in Preschool - 8th grade. DC Scholars develops life-long scholars who have the academic knowledge and skills, individual passions, and community-mindedness necessary to succeed in and contribute to an ever-changing world. We have cultivated a mission-oriented and collaborative team. Our staff is enthusiastic about constantly setting and reaching a high bar for students. The Position

The Dean of Student Culture is responsible for fostering a positive and inclusive school culture for the school community. They oversee the implementation of behavior management systems, social-emotional learning programs, and initiatives aimed at promoting a safe, respectful, and supportive learning environment. The Dean of Student Culture will work in close collaboration with the Assistant Principal of School Culture to implement consistent school-wide behavior systems, cultivate strong student-adult relationships, and promote a culture of respect, accountability, and joy throughout the school.

School-Wide Culture Leadership

  • Support the AP of Student Culture in executing the school’s vision for a positive, structured, and affirming school environment.
  • Model, monitor, and uphold all behavioral expectations, school routines, and core values across all common areas (hallways, cafeteria, arrival/dismissal, restrooms, transitions).
  • Lead proactive culture-building initiatives (e.g., community meetings, recognition systems, community circles).
  • Reinforce and celebrate positive student behaviors through incentive systems and celebrations.
  • Track and monitor school culture data (referrals, attendance, tardiness, etc.) and use insights to inform action steps.
  • Consistently monitor DeansList for implementation of schoolwide systems such usage, trends to elevate wins, gaps, and development needs to AP of Student Culture.

Student Support & Behavior Intervention:

  • Following the Ladder of Consequences, respond to student behavior referrals, conduct investigations, and issue consequences as needed
    • Facilitate In School Suspension, After School Detention, and Saturday Detention
  • Using the SafetyCare framework, respond to all student crisis situations and follow up as needed
  • Establish and implement small group supports for students struggling with conflict, bullying, belonging, risk-taking behaviors, self-esteem, or other socio-emotional needs
  • Manage the Check In/Check Out process for students with behavioral needs
  • Collaborate with the AP of Student Culture, AP of Student Support, and other support personnel to provide interventions and support services to students with behavioral or social-emotional needs.
  • Facilitate restorative conversations and conflict resolution processes to address conflicts and repair harm within the school community.
  • Communicate regularly with parents/guardians regarding student behavior, progress, and interventions, and solicit their input and involvement in behavior management efforts..
  • Maintain accurate records and documentation related to student behavior, interventions, and disciplinary actions in Dean’s List

Operations & Supervision

  • Ensure smooth operations of key daily systems: arrival, dismissal, lunch, hallway transitions, and recess.
  • Supervise and manage in-school suspension, detention, or reflection spaces, ensuring they are restorative and instructional.
  • Monitor school property to ensure it remains safe, clean, and conducive to learning.
  • Serve as a visible presence during all unstructured times to ensure consistency and calm.

Attendance Management:

  • Implement schoolwide strategy to reduce chronic absenteeism, invest students and families in daily school attendance
  • Consistently monitor attendance data for accuracy, identify trends, and recommend strategies for improvement
  • Facilitate student/family attendance conferences
  • Support the implementation of our attendance processes, including: letters, teacher communication, robocalls, culture leader communication, and CFSA referrals
  • Manage student safety Home Visits and MPD Wellness Checks when students do not attend school

Background and Experience

  • Bachelor's degree required
  • Minimum 2 years of experience working within a setting that serves K-8 students
  • Demonstrated ability to achieve exceptional results with children
  • Ability to motivate diverse students and cultivate a strong culture of achievement
  • Unshakable belief that all students should be held to high academic and behavioral standards
  • Genuine interest in family engagement, and ability to communicate effectively with parents
  • Demonstrated use of data to inform behavior management practices
  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, and strong interpersonal skills with students, parents, colleagues, and community members
  • Proficient in Google Suite (Docs, Sheets, Slides, Drive), Microsoft Outlook, and basic computer skills, including file management and navigating web-based system
  • Consistently collaborates with colleagues and commits to learning from others
  • Enthusiasm and openness to continuous feedback and coaching

Salary Details

The salary range for this role is $75,000 to $95,000 annually in alignment with the DC Scholars Dean of Culture salary band and our compensation philosophy. Starting salaries for new hires will be determined based on a combination of the new hire's relevant experience and market demands.
