Job Description

Pennfield Animal Hospital is seeking a dependable, customer service-oriented individual with a love for animals to be a Veterinary Technician and to serve as the doctor’s primary medical support person. They begin the examination procedure and continue to assist the doctor throughout the examination, diagnosis, and treatment phases. They assist the doctors in achieving greater efficiency by relieving them of technical work and administrative detail, and they have a significant role in communicating with clients about their pets.

Hours: Monday through Friday from 8:00 am – 6:00 pm

Key Responsibilities

Assists the doctor in medical, surgical, and dental procedures; prepares patients for surgery; assists the doctor in administering anesthesia; monitors patients during surgery and recovery; administers fluids.
Ensures gentle and compassionate care to patients.
Performs all duties in accordance with hospital medical policies and procedures.
Prepares and maintains the exam rooms and treatment areas or vehicle.
Performs physical examinations; records observations on patients.
Gives injections and administers oral medications in accordance with hospital policy.
Performs emergency procedures such as control of bleeding, resuscitation with oxygen, opening airways, and external cardiac massage.
Assists in restraining pets when necessary.
Performs clinical laboratory procedures such as fecal flotation exams, heartworm checks, skin scrapings, urinalysis, and fungal cultures; draws blood for laboratory analysis; maintains file of lab test results and ensures that test results are recorded in patient records.
Takes radiographs and administers EKGs.
Admits and discharges patients on the doctor's orders, ensuring that patients are well groomed and in a medically appropriate state. Counsels clients on various aspects of animal care; explains dosage/purpose of medications; reinforces the proper care and procedures that should be followed at home; makes follow-up calls to clients.
Understands usage and dosage for all prescription drugs and can readily explain them to the clients.
Properly cleans all surgical materials after they are used; keeps the operating room properly stocked and prepared for surgery.
Maintains an appropriate inventory of all medical supplies as determined by the inventory control system.
Understands and carries out oral and written directions.
Ability to work patiently with clients in varying emotional states.
Maintain positive and collaborative relationships with other employees with high level of teamwork to help in other areas when needed.
Other duties as assigned.
Education and Experience

Minimum of 2 years of experience as a Licensed Veterinary Technician is required.
Licensed Veterinary Technician is required.
High school diploma or equivalent is required.
Skills, Knowledge, and other Competencies

Must be comfortable handling cats and dogs, along with having a love for animals and for working in an animal care environment, treating all patients and clients with compassion.
Computer skills: Ability to use Windows based computer systems, word processing, email, web search and other skills needed to effectively use the practice management software program.
Must be organized with the ability to work independently, run surgery days, and handle more than one anesthesia case.
Possess good critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
Excellent communication skills and teamwork skills.
Must be punctual and dependable.
Ability to interact with clients and staff pleasantly and efficiently with high degree of customer service and display tact and diplomacy with difficult client situations.
Ability to work well in a fast-paced environment, handle stress and always maintain a professional demeanor.
Ability to understand and accurately carry out oral and written directions.
Work with a positive attitude and flexibility in work habits, along with ability to accept constructive criticism.
Strong attention to detail and focus with ability to efficiently multi-task.
Quickly learn how to pronounce, know the meaning of and spell commonly used veterinary terms.
Physical Demands and Work Environment

Physical Effort: Work requires lifting and carrying records and equipment weighting up to 40 lbs.; requires sitting or standing for extended periods of time.
Working conditions: May be exposed to unpleasant odors, noises, and animal feces. May be exposed to bites, scratches, and contagious diseases.
