Our client is seeking an experienced Assistant Controller to join a dynamic and growing real estate organization based in New York. This is an exciting opportunity to play a key role in managing financial operations across multiple development and property management projects.

About the Role

As Assistant Controller, you'll report to the senior finance leadership and oversee critical accounting functions, project reporting, audits, and compliance across a broad portfolio of real estate developments. You'll collaborate with project managers, lenders, investors, and external auditors while mentoring junior team members and enhancing financial systems.

Key Responsibilities

  • Oversee AP/AR, general ledger, bank reconciliations, and cash management.
  • Assist in preparation of monthly, quarterly, and annual financial reports.
  • Manage annual audits and coordinate with external auditors and tax advisors.
  • Track project budgets, costs, and contract management.
  • Manage construction loan draws and monitor cash flow projections.
  • Partner with internal and external stakeholders, including property management, lenders, and investors.
  • Ensure adherence to GAAP, loan covenants, LIHTC regulations, and affordable housing requirements.
  • Manage state and local income tax filings and property tax reporting.
  • Supervise and mentor accounting staff.
  • Improve internal controls, accounting procedures, and leverage technology for reporting efficiencies.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field; CPA preferred.
  • Minimum of 6 years of accounting experience, including 3+ years in real estate development or construction accounting.
  • Strong knowledge of real estate financial structures (construction loans, joint ventures, tax credits).
  • Proficiency with accounting systems such as Yardi (required), MRI, Sage, or QuickBooks.
  • Excellent analytical, leadership, and communication skills.
