Shift Notes

3x12's, 17-20 Call shifts in an 8-week staff scheduling period. This will include 12-hour weeknight shifts and 24-hour weekend shifts.

Unit Overview

  • Department: Surgical Services / OR
  • OR Suites: 2 (only 1 room runs at a time)
  • EMR: Epic

Case Volume

  • Monday & Wednesday: Primarily colonoscopies and endoscopies; ~4 cases/day
  • Tuesday: GYN cases; 3–4 cases/day
  • Thursday: No scheduled cases unless emergent
  • Friday: Approximately 5 cases/day

  • Cholecystectomies
  • Appendectomies
  • Hernia repairs
  • Abdominal hysterectomies
  • Hysteroscopies
  • D&C procedures
  • Colonoscopies
  • Endoscopies
  • C-sections

Required Certifications

  • BLS
  • ACLS
  • NRP (non-negotiable)

Experience Requirements

  • Minimum 3 years of OR experience
  • Pre-op and PACU experience preferred
  • Scrub experience not required but preferred

Staffing

  • No Charge Nurse; ANM oversees Surgical Services
  • Typically 4 RNs per shift:
    • 1 Pre-op RN
    • 1 OR RN
    • 1 PACU RN
    • 1 Float RN
  • CST staffing:
    • 2 CSTs on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday
    • 1 CST on Thursday

Scheduling

  • Three 12-hour shifts
  • Arrival time: 0700 daily
  • Shift scheduled to end at 1930
  • If cases finish early, staff may leave at 1630 but must remain available to return if needed
  • Weekly assignments distributed the week prior
  • Staff remain until all patients are discharged from PACU

Call Requirements

  • 17–20 call shifts per 8-week schedule
  • Includes:
    • 12-hour weeknight call shifts
    • 24-hour weekend call shifts
  • Call response time: 30 minutes

Floating

  • Expected to work Pre-op and PACU as needed
  • May be asked to assist in other departments when no surgeries are scheduled

Dress Code

  • Hospital-provided surgical scrubs

Orientation

  • 2 days of OR orientation
  • Limited Pre-op/PACU training if assigned there
  • No extensive cross-training provided
