University Instructors LLC is seeking talented people from diverse backgrounds to lead, change, and inspire students in the Norfolk area for SY 25-26.
In this role you will serve students in special education or general education programs as a classroom teacher.
**Candidates that hold a bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited institution in ANY field are eligible to take part in our pathways program. In this program you can become eligible for a provisional teaching license for school year 2026-27 and beyond.
Role and Responsibilities
Successful applicants will:
- Provide specially designed instruction to students with disabilities.
- Modify and adapt lessons for reading, language arts, mathematics, social studies, and science to accommodate students with disabilities in a classroom, utilizing course of study adopted by the appropriate authorities.
- Instruct students in citizenship and basic subject matter specified in state law, administrative regulations, and procedures of the school district.
- Develop lesson plans and instructional materials and provide differentiated instruction to adapt the lessons to the needs of each student.
- Translate the lessons into learning experiences to best utilize instructional time.
- Establish and maintain standards of student behavior needed to achieve a functional learning atmosphere in the classroom.
- Evaluate students’ academic and social growth, keep appropriate records, and prepare progress reports.
- Communicate with parents through conferences and other means to discuss student progress and to interpret the school program.
- Identify student needs and work with other professional staff members in assessing and helping students solve health, attitude, and learning problems.
- Develop, implement, supervise, and evaluate Individual Education Programs and instructional classroom programs.
- Adapt lesson(s) for the purpose of implementing IEP goals and meeting the special needs of students in the least restrictive environment.
- Develop and support the Functional Behavioral Assessment (FBA) and Behavioral Intervention Plan (BIP) process including necessary data collection.
- Ensure compliance with and may administer state and district wide assessments including provision of student accommodations.
- Provide instructional and/or behavioral intervention strategies to support students in the least restrictive environment.
- Assess students’ social and academic needs for the purpose of supporting students in the least restrictive environment.
- Collaborate with school personnel, parents and agencies to develop and modify students programming to maximize student outcomes.
- Manage student behavior utilizing effective and evidence-based approaches.
- Work and support paraprofessionals supporting program classrooms.
- Confer with student’s IEP team (physical therapist, occupational therapist, speech therapist and other special education teachers, specialists and staff) to fully implement the student’s IEP.
- Work includes data-based decision making, including gathering and interpreting data.
- Provide a classroom environment that is organized and utilizes visual strategies to support students in becoming independent learners.
- Participate cooperatively with the appropriate administrator in the implementation of the personnel evaluation system.
- Maintain required inventory records.
- Review student files to determine appropriate programming.
- Supervise students in out-of-classroom activities during the assigned work day.
- Administer standardized tests in accordance with established procedures.
- Participate in curriculum development programs as required.
- Maintain professional competence through educational in-service activities provided and/or self- selected and through other professional growth activities.
- Perform duties of the job in a classroom setting and/or in a work experience location.
Education and additional requirements
- Candidates must possess a bachelor’s degree in any field from a regionally accredited institution recognized in the state of VA.
- Complete or have completed a course in the foundations of special education from an approved university or institution.
- Successfully obtain a provisional Teaching License in the subject area they are employed in from the VA Department of Education.
- Have excellent oral and written communication skills.
Rate: Up to $32 Hourly/40 Hours a Week/200 workdays in the calendar school year
