Description

American Traveler is seeking an experienced RN for a Med/Surg Orthopedic Trauma unit at a Level I Trauma Center in Nebraska, requiring at least 2 years of experience and an active NE or compact RN license.

Details

  • Acute care setting on a 55-bed Med/Surg Orthopedic Trauma unit (4th Floor South)
  • Level I Trauma Center
  • Patient population includes joint replacements, fractures, colon resections, COPD exacerbations, prostatectomy, cellulitis, sepsis, ortho trauma, GI bleeds, pneumonia, and failure to thrive
  • Nurse-to-patient ratio of 1:5-6; nurse aides/PCTs available at a 1:10-20 ratio
  • Charge nurse present on each shift and carries an assignment
  • Telemetry techs interpret strips; RNs are expected to have basic telemetry awareness
  • RNs required to titrate Heparin, lidocaine, and ketamine drips; PCA pumps also used
  • Charting via Epic (experience required)
  • 12-hour day and night shifts available (0630–1900 or 1830–0700); travelers are assigned schedules with limited block scheduling available
  • Typically every other weekend required, with potential for additional weekend coverage based on unit demand
  • 2–3 holidays required between Thanksgiving and New Year's
  • Floating required to other med/surg areas or units with med/surg patients
  • 13-week contract

Requirements

  • Active NE or Compact (NLC) RN license required; pending licenses are not accepted
  • Current BLS certification (AHA) required; pending certifications are not accepted
  • Minimum 2 years of RN experience required
  • Med/Surg experience required
  • Telemetry awareness and experience with titratable drips (Heparin, lidocaine, ketamine) and PCA pumps required
  • Epic EMR experience required
  • Driver's license required for consideration (used to verify candidate resides at least 50 miles from the facility)
  • 2 professional references required: one supervisor from within the last 12 months and one peer or supervisor from within the last 3 years, both including dates of employment and eligibility for rehire

Additional Information

  • Candidates must reside at least 50 miles from the facility; driver's license is used to verify permanent address
  • Candidates may not be currently employed (full-time, part-time, or PRN) at any CommonSpirit-affiliated facility, including CHI and/or Dignity; candidates who worked PRN through outside staffing firms will be considered
  • Unit-specific orientation is 2 days, followed by a pass/fail open-book skills exam on the first Friday of orientation — a score of 90% or higher is required to pass
  • RTO requests (7 days or fewer per 13-week contract) must be submitted upfront; additional RTO will not be approved
  • Unit serves a diverse patient population including Spanish-, Karen-, and Burmese-speaking patients
  • Mechanical lifts are available in every other room
  • Strong emphasis on hourly rounding, patient responsiveness, and managing multiple admissions and discharges within a single shift
  • Navy blue scrubs required for RNs
  • Artificial nails are prohibited in all patient care areas
  • Schedules are posted 6 weeks in advance
