Position Summary:
The Registered Nurse (RN) provides clinical oversight, direct care, and health advocacy for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD). This role ensures that all health services meet Maryland/DDS standards while honoring each person’s dignity, preferences, and goals. The RN collaborates with interdisciplinary teams to promote wellness, safety, and meaningful community participation.
Core Responsibilities:
Health Assessments & Care Planning
Conduct nursing assessments and contribute to Individual Support Plans (ISPs), Health Care Protocols, and Behavior Support Plans (BSPs). Ensure plans reflect person-centered goals and clinical needs.
Medication Oversight
Monitor medication administration by Certified Medication Technicians (CMTs), ensure MAR accuracy, and address medication errors or refusals per DDS and Board of Nursing guidelines.
Direct Nursing Care
Provide wound care, tube feedings, seizure management, and other skilled nursing interventions. Train staff on individualized health supports and emergency protocols.
Documentation & Compliance
Maintain clear, objective, and person-first documentation of health services, incidents, and clinical observations. Ensure records are HIPAA-compliant and audit-ready.
Staff Training & Delegation
Train and delegate nursing tasks to CMTs and Direct Support Professionals (DSPs) per Maryland Nurse Practice Act. Reinforce trauma-informed, rights-based care practices.
Health Advocacy & Communication
Coordinate with families, providers, and specialists to ensure continuity of care. Support individuals in understanding their health conditions and making informed choices.
Emergency Response & Incident Management
Respond to medical emergencies, complete incident reports, and participate in root cause analysis and corrective action planning.
Qualifications:
• Active RN license in Maryland
• CPR and First Aid certification (required or within 30 days of hire)
• Experience with IDD populations preferred
• Knowledge of DDS regulations, Health Care Protocols, and BSPs
• Strong clinical judgment and documentation skills
• Ability to lift and support individuals safely using approved techniques
