Summary of Position
It will be the responsibility of the Animal Care Team Manager, under the direct supervision of the Operations Director, to oversee both the Adoption & Customer Service Specialist team and the Animal Caretaker team. Jointly, these teams are responsible for the daily care of all sheltered animals from intake to outcome. Additionally, these teams are responsible for maintaining a clean and well-maintained shelter environment while ensuring a positive and supportive experience for all visitors and volunteers.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Supervise Animal Caretakers and Adoption & Customer Service Specialists, including day-to-day staff management and conflict resolution.
- Ensure that all animals receive excellent care, including a clean environment, nutritious food, regular exercise, prompt medical attention, enrichment activities, and behavioral support.
- Create and maintain a pleasant environment for all community members visiting the shelter.
- Provide a clean, safe, and sanitary environment for both animals and people.
- Create schedules that ensure adequate coverage or arrange for coverage in instances when staff are unable to work.
- Ensure that current and incoming staff receive proper training and adhere to the most current best practices for animal welfare.
- Communicate principles that convey and impart an understanding of the policies and procedures of the Humane Society of Truckee-Tahoe.
- Communicate regularly and effectively both within the animal teams and with other staff/teams.
- Be committed to a high safety standard and be willing and able to comply with all safety laws and HSTTs safety policies and rules. The Animal Care Team Manager must report safety violations and potential safety concerns to the appropriate supervisory or management personnel in a timely and sensitive manner.
- Have a working knowledge of the current supply of pet food, litter, cleaning supplies, etc, and order as needed.
- Collaborate with the Operations Director, Foster Manager, and Community Resource Coordinator to maintain accurate records of animals entering and exiting the shelter.
- Have a solution-focused mindset to efficiently and effectively resolve issues.
- Personally, and on a team level, stay up to date on sheltering best practices, policies, and participate in continuing education opportunities, and provide opportunities for your staff to do the same.
- Get to know all the pets and provide socialization as time allows.
- Identify pets struggling in the shelter environment and implement behavior, enrichment, and/or transfer plans.
- Communicate with volunteers regularly about animal behavior and respond to their feedback.
- Collaborate with the community and community service officers to reunite lost and found pets.
- Collaborate with the clinic manager to ensure all animals receive proper medical care and medication as needed.
- Oversee an animals journey through the shelter from intake to ensure that their needs are met, we communicate what we know about them, and that we provide the best placement possible.
- Assist with other duties and departments, such as foster, intake, licensing, etcas needed.
Additional Duties and Responsibilities
- Treat all animals humanely, with compassion and concern, both on and off the job, and transmit these values to others.
- Assist with tours, lectures, public education programs, fundraising activities, and special events as needed.
- Be prepared and ready to assist with emergencies and disasters.
- Provide coverage for the foster program manager with on-call and on-site support on Saturday and Sunday.
Qualication Requirements:
- Required: Management experience. Experience managing and supporting people in challenging physical and emotional job roles.
- Required: Basic animal care knowledge. Preferred: Knowledge of domestic animals, including behavior, appropriate care and housing, common health problems, disease symptoms, and handling techniques.
- Demonstrate personal communication skills, including effective phone skills, as well as the ability to communicate effectively in both written and oral formats.
- Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to customers, clients, and other employees of the organization.
- Have a valid drivers license with a clear driving record for at least one year before application.
- Proficiency with technology and programs such as Word, GSuite, social media platforms, etc
- Must be an energetic, friendly, creative team player with a passion for saving animals and working with people.
- Must be able to spend a great deal of time working with and handling companion animals.
- Knowledge of decision-making techniques and skill in mediating disputes, conflicts, and grievances.
- Interest and ability to remain abreast of trends and best practices in the humane movement.
- Must be able to accommodate a set work schedule, which will include weekends, evenings, and some holidays.
- Must be able to participate in events, including nights and weekends, and assist in the set-up and breakdown of events when needed.
Education and Experience:
- Minimum of two years of supervisory experience required.
- Animal welfare experience preferred.
Physical Requirements:
- Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds.
- Must be able to perform strenuous manual labor and move quickly in an agile manner when dealing with animals and in cases of emergency.
- Must be able to work with physically strong.
- Must be able to handle cats and other small animals.
- Must be able to bend, stoop, hike, walk, kneel, and lift comfortably.
- Vision to read printed materials and a computer screen.
- Hearing and speech to communicate in person and over the telephone.
- Finger dexterity to access, enter, and retrieve data using a computer keyboard.

COMPENSATION: $75,000- $85,000 annually, depending on experience.
POSITION: Full-time, exempt, approximately 40 hours per week. Daily reporting hours and days of the week may vary according to the department's needs. This position requires weekend work. It may also include evening and holiday work.
LOCATION: Truckee Animal Shelter.
REPORTS TO: Operations Director
