Role: Dry Bulk Operator 2- Heavy Equipment Operator

Responsibilities:

  1. Terminal Operations & Product Handling:
    • Oversee and manage the day-to-day operations for the safe and efficient handling of dry bulk products through various modes of transportation, including rail, vessel, barge, and truck.
    • Manage vessel and barge operations, including the loading and unloading of products.
    • Operate dry bulk equipment (e.g., conveyors, forklifts, track hoes, front-end loaders, bobcats) to facilitate product transfer and terminal operations.
    • Ensure safe operations when navigating and working around heavy machinery and personnel in tight spaces like ship/ barge holds, decks, and dock areas.
  2. Rail Operations:
    • Responsible for connecting and disconnecting railcars for loading and unloading products to/from railcars in both dry and liquid operations.
    • Ensure that all railcar operations are completed safely, on time, and in compliance with safety protocols and company standards.
  3. Equipment Operation & Maintenance:
    • Operate a variety of equipment, including forklifts, track hoes, front-end loaders, and more, to carry out terminal duties.
    • Perform routine maintenance, inspections, and basic repairs on equipment (e.g., fluid and filter changes, greasing systems).
    • Complete daily inspections of assigned equipment and forward any maintenance requirements to the appropriate department.
    • Act as a signalman to direct other equipment operators and crane operators, ensuring safe maneuvering of equipment.
  4. Safety & Compliance:
    • Ensure compliance with all safety protocols, including the Job Hazard Analysis (JHA) and permit requirements for specific tasks.
    • Be proactive in reporting safety hazards, unsafe conditions, or work-related injuries as soon as they occur.
    • Participate in Emergency Response Team (ERT) activities and maintain readiness to respond to emergency situations.
  5. Cleaning & Maintenance:
    • Ensure all terminal equipment, including conveyors, equipment, and work areas, are kept clean at the end of each shift.
    • Maintain a clean and organized workspace to promote a safe, efficient, and environmentally responsible operation.
  6. Teamwork & Communication:
    • Collaborate effectively with team members and management to achieve operational goals.
    • Ensure clear communication with other operators, crew members, and supervisors to maintain smooth operations and safety.
    • Demonstrate willingness to work with a team, share knowledge, and assist others when needed.
  7. Documentation & Reporting:
    • Complete and submit daily inspection reports for equipment and work areas to the maintenance department.
    • Ensure timely and accurate reporting of all operational issues, safety concerns, and incidents following company protocols.
    • Submit work orders for required maintenance and follow up on their completion.
  8. Operational Excellence & Continuous Improvement:
    • Maintain focus on operational goals such as 100% on-time completion of railcar operations and ensuring 100% safety in work execution.
    • Strive for continuous improvement in efficiency, safety, and operational performance through participation in training and best practices.

    • Always maintain a strict adherence to safety protocols and guidelines, including proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE).
    • Be accountable for personal and team safety, reporting hazards, injuries, and unsafe conditions immediately.

  2. Operational Efficiency:
    • Complete all railcar, vessel, and equipment operations efficiently, ensuring tasks are completed on time without issues.
    • Demonstrate a high level of competency in operating equipment such as forklifts, track hoes, and other machinery to facilitate terminal tasks.
  3. Maintenance and Equipment Care:
    • Conduct thorough pre-job inspections and periodic maintenance on all assigned equipment to ensure optimal functioning.
    • Report any needed maintenance and ensure that maintenance tasks are completed in a timely and efficient manner.
  4. Teamwork & Collaboration:
    • Work cooperatively with colleagues and other departments to ensure terminal operations are carried out effectively.
    • Treating others with respect contribute to a positive work environment, and foster teamwork to achieve common goals.
  5. Communication & Reporting:
    • Effectively communicate any operational challenges, safety issues, or maintenance needs to supervisors and peers.
    • Ensure that all inspection reports, incident reports, and maintenance requests are completed accurately and on time.

    • Stay updated on industry trends, best operational practices, and new technologies to support continuous improvement in terminal operations.
  7. Flexibility & Adaptability:
    • Be flexible and adaptable to working different shifts, including weekends and holidays, and be available for call-out duties.
    • Understand that operational needs may require adjusting to changes in schedules and job duties.
  8. Physical & Environmental Readiness:
    • Be prepared to work outdoors in all weather conditions, handling hazardous materials and wearing the required PPE, including rain gear, FRC coveralls, hard hats, safety glasses, and ear plugs.
    • Ensure the ability to perform physical tasks such as lifting up to 50 pounds, operating various equipment, and working in confined spaces and at elevated heights.

Qualifications:

  • Experience: Minimum of 1+ year in a Dry Bulk Operator role or equivalent experience in terminal operations, equipment handling, and safety compliance.
  • Skills: Proficient in operating a variety of heavy equipment such as forklifts, track hoes, front-end loaders, etc.
  • Certifications: Must possess or be able to obtain a TWIC (Transportation Worker Identification Credential) card.
  • Physical Requirements: Ability to perform tasks that may include lifting up to 50 pounds, operating machinery, and working in challenging environments.
