A PRN (Pro Re Nata) or Per Diem healthcare professional is an on-call employee who works on an as-needed basis without a guaranteed schedule.
Primary Responsibilities
PRN healthcare professionals perform the same duties as their full-time counterparts within their specific roles, but work on a flexible, on-call basis. They must be prepared to integrate quickly into different teams and adapt to various work environments while maintaining the same standards of care and professionalism.
Key Duties and ResponsibilitiesClinical Duties (Role-Specific)

Perform all clinical responsibilities associated with their licensed profession

Provide direct patient care according to established protocols and standards

Collaborate with permanent staff and interdisciplinary teams

Maintain competency in all required clinical skills and procedures

Adapt quickly to different unit policies and procedures
Flexibility and Adaptability

Accept assignments on short notice (sometimes same-day)

Work in multiple departments or units as needed

Adapt to different patient populations and acuity levels

Integrate effectively with various healthcare teams

Maintain proficiency across different clinical areas
Documentation and Compliance

Complete all required documentation accurately and timely

Maintain current licenses, certifications, and competencies

Adhere to all facility policies, procedures, and safety protocols

Participate in mandatory training and education programs

Ensure compliance with regulatory requirements
Communication and Teamwork

Communicate effectively with permanent staff about unit-specific procedures

Provide and receive comprehensive patient reports

Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams during assignments

Report concerns or issues to appropriate supervisors

Maintain professional relationships across multiple departments
Education and Licensing RequirementsGeneral Requirements

Current RN License
-
Current CPR and Basic Life Support (BLS) certification

Previous experience in multiple clinical settings
