Construction Estimator
Position Overview
We are seeking a detail-oriented Construction Estimator to prepare accurate cost estimates for commercial construction projects. The role supports project planning and bidding by analyzing drawings, specifications, and subcontractor quotes to produce competitive, comprehensive proposals. The ideal candidate combines strong estimating skills with construction knowledge and commercial project experience to help secure profitable work and manage project budgets.
Key Responsibilities
- Review architectural, structural, mechanical, and electrical drawings and specifications to identify scope and requirements.
- Prepare detailed quantity takeoffs and cost estimates for labor, materials, equipment, and subcontractor work.
- Solicit, evaluate, and coordinate subcontractor and supplier bids; maintain relationships to ensure competitive pricing.
- Develop and submit accurate, timely bid proposals and pricing packages for commercial construction projects.
- Collaborate with project managers, engineers, and procurement to align estimates with project plans and schedules.
- Maintain and update cost databases, estimating templates, and historical bid records to improve accuracy and efficiency.
- Perform risk assessments and contingency planning to account for project uncertainties and scope changes.
- Attend pre-bid meetings and site visits to gather information and clarify project conditions.
- Support post-bid activities including bid clarifications, negotiations, and value engineering to meet client budgets.
- Monitor project costs during execution and provide input for change orders and budget control as needed.
Qualifications
- Minimum 3-5 years of experience in construction estimating, preferably with a focus on commercial projects.
- Proven proficiency in quantity takeoffs, cost estimating, and preparing bid packages.
- Strong knowledge of construction methods, materials, and building systems for commercial construction.
- Experience with estimating software (e.g., Bluebeam, PlanSwift, On-Screen Takeoff) and proficiency in Microsoft Excel.
- Excellent analytical, numerical, and attention-to-detail skills with the ability to interpret drawings and specifications.
- Strong communication and negotiation skills for interacting with clients, subcontractors, and internal teams.
- Ability to manage multiple bids and priorities under tight deadlines with good organizational skills.
- Degree or diploma in Construction Management, Civil Engineering, Quantity Surveying, or related field preferred; relevant certifications (e.g., CE, RICS) a plus.
