Job Description
This role focuses on fabricating and fitting structural and sheet metal components in a job shop manufacturing environment. You will interpret job orders, bills of materials, and blueprints to create accurate cut lists, lay out materials, and prepare assemblies for welding. While other team members can perform welding and shearing, you will add value by bringing strong layout, fitting, and fabrication skills to support a wide variety of custom projects.
Responsibilities
- Review job orders and bills of materials (BOMs) to identify all required parts and materials, ranging from simple to complex assemblies with up to 25 components.
- Read and interpret drawings and blueprints to develop accurate cut lists, including dimensions such as length, width, and angles.
- Lay out materials according to blueprints, marking locations for holes to be punched or drilled and ensuring correct orientation and fit.
- Prepare parts for assembly by cutting, drilling, punching, and grinding as needed to meet specifications.
- Set up weldments by positioning and tacking components so that welders can complete final welds.
- Perform fabrication and fitting tasks on hard steel, aluminum, and stainless materials in a job shop environment.
- Use hand tools and power tools safely and effectively for cutting, grinding, and material preparation.
- Work on structural components such as stairs and stringers when required, ensuring accurate layout and fit.
- Collaborate with welders, press brake operators, and other shop personnel to complete projects efficiently and accurately.
- Maintain a clean, organized work area and follow all safety procedures, including proper use of personal protective equipment.
- Adapt to varying job orders and custom work, demonstrating flexibility and problem-solving in a fast-paced job shop setting.
- Support occasional Saturday production needs when workload requires additional hours.
Essential Skills
- 1–3 years of fabricating and fitting experience in a manufacturing or job shop environment.
- Proficiency in reading and interpreting blueprints, drawings, and bills of materials (BOMs).
- Strong layout skills, including creating cut lists and marking materials for cutting, drilling, and punching.
- Hands-on experience working with hard steel, aluminum, and stainless materials.
- Demonstrated job shop experience, including handling varied and custom projects.
- Ability to set up welds and tack weldments to prepare assemblies for welding by others.
- Mechanical aptitude and familiarity with structural fabrication and sheet metal work.
- Comfort using power tools and hand tools, including grinders and cutting equipment.
- Attention to detail and accuracy in measurements, layout, and fit-up.
- Ability to work independently and manage job orders from start to pre-weld completion.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Experience with stairs and stringers fabrication is strongly preferred.
- Pipefitting experience is a plus.
- Experience operating press brakes, shears, and punch presses is highly desirable.
- Familiarity with grind wheels, saw operation, handrail fabrication, and round pipe fitting is beneficial.
- Any certifications, apprenticeships, or formal education in welding, fabrication, or related trades are considered a plus.
- Comfort working in a flexible, autonomous environment where responsibilities may vary based on workload and skill set.
