Job Description

Job Description Nuclear Mechanical Systems Engineer — Component Qualification

Clean energy needs builders. At Westinghouse, you will help ensure the integrity of components within the primary pressure boundary—the core of safe nuclear operations. From modeling stress states to guiding suppliers, your work will ripple across operating plants and AP1000 reactors worldwide.

Your mission

Based in Cranberry Township, PA on a hybrid schedule, and reporting to the Manager, RVI Load Development & Analysis • Reactor Component Engineering, you will steward designs from concept through qualification. No relocation assistance is provided.

How you'll make an impact

  • Own mechanical design, analysis, and qualification activities for repair and modification of primary pressure boundary components in Westinghouse-designed nuclear units, including AP1000.
  • Employ a full toolkit: finite element simulations (e.g., Ansys), closed-form calculations, and Westinghouse internal analysis codes to validate design intent.
  • Drive subsystem integration with component, system, and manufacturing leaders; untangle emergent issues with speed and rigor.
  • Co-develop executable schedules with project managers and technical leads, balancing scope, risk, and timelines.
  • Surface technical risks early; chart mitigation paths and lead resolution.
  • Embed compliance with NRC/DOE/ASME codes, standards, and criteria relevant to nuclear reactors in every design decision.
  • Provide technical leadership and collaborate with national laboratories, sub-contractors, suppliers, fabricators, and customers.
  • Support refueling outages both remotely and on-site, including time-sensitive 12-hour and overnight shifts when needed.

What you need to succeed

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering required; Mechanical, Engineering Mechanics, or Aerospace preferred.
  • At least 3 years of experience in component structural analysis or thermo-hydraulics.
  • Strength in Finite Element Analysis (FEA); exposure to Ansys is valuable.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) License familiarity is beneficial.
