Program Background & Purpose

Model United Nations

Model UN is a simulation of the United Nations in which students act as ambassadors and diplomats, tackling real-world global issues. Students research country positions, draft policy documents or position papers, debate with peers from other countries, negotiate resolutions, and strive for consensus on international problems.
This activity helps deepen students understanding of global affairs, international relations, diplomacy, negotiation, public speaking, and critical thinking.


History Bee

The 2026 History Bee, presented by The Frederick News-Post,challenges 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade students to apply their curricular studies in a friendly competitive format. The questions are consistently developed around the Frederick County Public Schools (FCPS) elementary curriculum. This Bee is a locally recognized event and supports student engagement in history, reinforcing content knowledge and excitement about historical inquiry.


Role & Responsibilities

As After-School Teacher / Coach, your responsibilities will include:

  • Designing, coordinating, and leading Model UN sessions (once weekly).
  • Designing, coordinating, and leading History Bee practice sessions (once weekly).
  • Preparing students for tournament formats, helping them with research, writing, public speaking, and strategy.
  • Attending tournaments (both Model UN conferences and History Bee events) with students; this time counts as compensated hours.
  • Communicating with students, parents, and school administration about schedules, materials, expectations, and progress.
  • Reflecting on and adapting instruction to meet students needs: offering differentiated support, feedback, and extension.
  • Ensuring a positive, engaging, supportive environment where students feel included, challenged, and encouraged.
  • Handling necessary logistics (e.g. registration, travel coordination, materials, room reservations).


Qualifications & Ideal Traits

You would be a great fit if you:

  • Have strong interest in and knowledge of history, social studies, world affairs, or related disciplines
  • Are comfortable coaching research, writing, public speaking, debate, and critical thinking
  • Are organized and proactive in planning and logistics
  • Have experience with (or willingness to learn) tournament formats
  • Are enthusiastic, supportive, and able to connect with middle and elementary school students
  • Have excellent communication skills with students, parents, and staff
  • Applicants with Bachelors degrees are preferred
  • Applicants must have at least one year of experience working in similar capacities with students
