Description
American Traveler is seeking an experienced RN for a Progressive Care Unit (PCU) position at a Level 1 Trauma teaching hospital, requiring a GA or compact RN license and at least 2 years of PCU or relevant med-surg/telemetry experience.

- Progressive Care Unit (PCU) within a 637-licensed-bed Level 1 Trauma teaching hospital that is also a designated Chest Pain and Stroke Center
- 24-bed unit primarily serving cardiothoracic and vascular surgical patients, both pre- and post-operative, with a secondary population including cardiology, pulmonology, and general med-surg patients
- Patient cases include pre/post LVAD, acute and chronic disease, and common med-surg co-morbidities such as diabetes, hypertension, CHF, infections, and electrolyte imbalances
- RN patient ratio is 1:4–6; CNA support of 2–3 per shift
- 12-hour night shifts, 7P–7A, 36 hours per week
- Weekend rotation requires approximately 5–6 shifts per 6-week schedule
- No on-call requirements
- Floating to all adult med-surg and telemetry units within the facility is required
- EMR: Epic (experience required); IV pumps: Alaris; medication dispensing: Pyxis; monitors: Philips
- Unit-specific equipment includes Glucommander, PCA pain management, bladder scanners, portable oxygen systems, VS3 and Dynamapp vital sign monitors, and a central telemetry monitoring unit
Requirements
- Active GA or compact RN license currently in hand
- Required certifications: BLS, Basic Cardiac Rhythm (BCR), ACLS, and NIHSS
- Medical-Surgical national certification preferred
- Minimum 2 years of PCU or relevant experience required, with most recent experience within the last year
- Proficiency in trach care, chest tube management, PIV starts, Glucommander, insulin drips, heparin drips, and titrating drips to HR
- Strong cardiac monitoring and telemetry interpretation skills
- Experience with IV insertion and care, central line management, wound care, and post-op monitoring
- Epic EMR experience required
- Must have a minimum of 1 professional reference dated within the past year from a Supervisor, Manager, Director, or Charge RN
- Last 4 digits of SSN and full date of birth required for consideration
- Must have been separated from any AHSE facility for at least 1 year following a permanent position prior to applying
Additional Information
- Responsibilities include care coordination with interdisciplinary teams, discharge planning, and patient education with a focus on renal and fluid management
- Unit support includes CNAs, a unit secretary (7A–11P), a house-wide call secretary overnight, a charge nurse on each unit, a PICC team, discharge/resource nurses, and 24/7 RT, hospitalist, and intensivist coverage
- Orientation consists of 1 day of general facility orientation with educational modules followed by 2 days of departmental orientation
- Holiday coverage requires working 75% of major holidays, including Thanksgiving or the day after, 12/24 or 12/25, and 12/31 or 1/1
- RTO requests require manager approval
- Scrub color for RNs is navy blue
- A clinical interview with the manager is required prior to placement
