Job DescriptionJob Summary:
Supervises the inpatient nursing department during the assigned shift. Ensures policies and procedures are followed; maintains and improves the level of patient care and the standards of care of the inpatient nursing department; assures compliance with established standards and practices and regulatory requirements by all nursing personnel. Carries out special assignments as directed by the Nurse Manager, Director of Nursing, and/or the CNO.
Duties and Responsibilities:
NURSING PRACTICE AND PATIENT CARE ACTIVITY
- The Assistant Nurse Manager will be able and expected to perform to all duties and responsibilities set forth in the job description of the Staff RN. Supports a 24-hour team approach to the delivery of patient care to meet patient need and will participate in an on-call coverage schedule during off hours, weekends, and holidays
LEADERSHIP / MANAGEMENT ACTIVITIES
- The Assistant Nurse Manager provides the leadership and supervisory ability necessary to assure the inpatient nursing department operates at full potential.
- Demonstrates excellent communication skills.
- Uses appropriate chain-of-command.
- Follows through on problems that may compromise patient care.
- Demonstrates an understanding of work routines on all shifts and supports a cohesive 24-
hour team responsibility to patient care.
OPERATIONAL MANAGEMENT
- Demonstrate excellent communication skills, solicit input from team members, maintain open
lines of communication between the team and demonstrate positive communication with
other departments. - Communicates effectively with patients, physicians, health care facilities, peers and other
members of the health care team to maximize successful patient outcomes. - Interacts effectively with patients, families and/or other care givers to promote customer
satisfaction. - Demonstrates administrative support when changes and/or decisions are announced.
- Meets with the Unit Nurse Manager, DON, and CNO on a regular basis to provide support
and to listen to concerns. - Acts as a patient advocate by focusing health care team members on the patient’s goals.
- In collaboration with HR, the Director of Nursing, and/or CNO, provide counseling and
support for nursing staff, including anecdotal information and/or formal counseling when
appropriate. - Support staff through professional expertise and training.
- Facilitate development of critical thinking, clinical judgment in team members through role
modeling, teaching, coaching, mentoring, and meaningful feedback with regular staff/leader
rounding each shift or as assigned. - Uses constructive approach to giving feedback on the delivery of patient care to employees
on all shifts. - Identifies behaviors and/or practices of employees that support or inhibit carrying out the
goals of Ranken Jordan needed to deliver high quality patient care and responds as
indicated. - Maintains a high level of integrity and confidentiality in addressing employee issues.
- Evaluate and review nursing services staff as assigned in collaboration with Director of
Nursing. - Acts as a patient advocate by focusing health care team members on the patient’s goals.
FISCAL MANAGEMENT
- Ensures patient staffing patterns follow the Nursing Matrix.
- Uses critical thinking, keeping patient acuity in mind, when deviating away from the Nursing
Matrix. Is accountable for changes to the Nursing Matrix. - Informs the Director of Nursing and/or CNO of equipment needs and ensures all appropriate
paperwork is completed. - Inform Director of Respiratory Care of equipment needs
PROFESSIONAL EXPECTATIONS AND LEADERSHIP
- Assist Director of Nursing and/or CNO in the development and review of department policies
and procedures. - Recommend changes in policies/procedures.
- Promotes staff awareness of updated information or changes in policy/procedure and introduction of new policies/procedures.
- Assists with identifying, implementing, monitoring and reporting quality assurance opportunities working collaboratively with the Quality & Patient Safety department.
- Participates in Nursing Shared Leadership Council
- Attends education programs as deemed mandatory by nursing department policies.
- Annually plans, implements, and evaluates personal goals and objectives with Director of Nursing.
- Utilizes current nursing literature, both clinical and managerial, to improve performance.
- Has progress meetings with Director of Nursing as scheduled.
People Management:
- Participates on People Manager Team, develops your team members and always aims to deliver on
the mission of Ranken Jordan with alignment to the Strategic Plan. - Participates as requested on special committees and/or projects.
- Leads by exhibiting behavior consistent with the mission and values of Ranken Jordan and fosters teamwork cross-departmentally.
- Ensures conformance with hospital policy, preserving our patient care model of “Care Beyond the
Bedside” and promoting our employee culture
Qualifications
- Background Requisites: The Assistant Nurse Manager will preferably have three years of nurse
leadership experience (ie: Charge Nurse, Nurse Manager, House Supervisor, etc.) - Three (3) to five (5) years RN experience preferably in Pediatrics,
- Current license to practice as a Registered Nurse in the State of Missouri.
- Current Basic Life Support (BLS) from the American Heart Association and
- Current PALS certification or completion within 6 months.
Physical Demands:
These include stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, grasping, pulling, pushing, standing, carrying and
lifting of light loads (up to 35 lb.) as necessary for patient care.
