Part-time: 16-24 h/wk. Working days can be arranged with PI during Monday – Friday, 9am-5pm.

Position Description:

The Department of Oral Biology is seeking motivated individuals with background in veterinary technology, veterinary surgical nursing and/or animal models to join our team at UB. The work will be performed in a fast-paced regenerative dentistry lab. Prior experience working with lab animals (rodents/ferrets/cats) is preferred. Basic veterinary technician skills (intubation, catheter placement and anesthesia monitoring in cats/dogs) can be adapted to other species. Training will be provided. We are a multidisciplinary group seeking individuals to join our team who are excited to learn new things and are dedicated to the animals and project goals. Successful applicants are expected to assist with the planning and implementation of current and new animal models by:

o Performing diagnostic tests, x-rays and blood or fluid analyses.

o Safely restraining animals. Administering medications.

o Preparing animals for surgery, including intubation, catheter placement, sterilizing tools, administering anesthesia, monitoring vital signs and anesthesia recovery.

o Lab maintenance (handling/disposal of hazardous waste, inventory, ordering supplies).

o Maintaining procedure logs and anesthesia records.

o Supporting in vivo studies in a strongly collaborative environment.

o Supporting investigator during surgical procedures.

o Tissue embedding/sectioning/histology (No experience needed. Training will be provided).

o Microscopy and micro-CT scanning and data analysis (No experience needed. Training will be provided).

Our lab works closely with scientists to develop new dental regenerative therapies and conduct translational studies, often in collaboration with different centers and lab partners. Solid organizational skills are a must. The candidate should be able to manage multiple detail-oriented tasks with minimal supervision, capable of trouble-shooting and critical thinking, self-motivated, dedicated, and creative. Excellent organizational skills, ability to work well with others, and willingness to learn new lab techniques and follow instructions are key.

Minimum Qualifications:

o Associate degree in a related field

o Current Veterinary Technician license or equivalent experience

o At least one year of experience in a veterinary or laboratory setting

o Experience in anesthesia of small/mid-size animals and assisting in/performing surgery

o Microsoft Office proficiency

Preferred Qualifications (if any):

o Experience with laboratory techniques (histology sample processing and micro-CT)

o Data organization experience in MS Excel

o Ability to troubleshoot laboratory protocols

o Interest in contributing to publications

Breakdown of job duties (by percentages):

o Work with investigator on animal procedures, anesthesia, monitoring and follow up care (35%)

o Sample processing and analysis for histology, micro-CT (50%). Training will be provided.

o Maintain lab in working condition (keeping inventory of supplies and reagents, placing of orders, update protocols, arranging maintenance services for lab equipment, etc. (10%).

o Meet weekly with main investigator to discuss experiments and lab maintenance (5%).
