SEAOC EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR – JOB POSTING

The Structural Engineers Association of California (SEAOC), a 93-year-old professional society dedicated to advancing the structural engineering profession, is seeking a dynamic and self-driven Executive Director to lead the organization into a new era. SEAOC is a 501(c)(6) non-profit association representing 3,000 members across four regional associations:

  • Structural Engineers Association of Central California
  • Structural Engineers Association of Northern California
  • Structural Engineers Association of Southern California
  • Structural Engineers Association of San Diego

SEAOC is undergoing a significant reorganization, consolidating into a single entity to better serve its members and the profession. The new Executive Director will play a pivotal role in this transformation, shaping SEAOC’s future and modernizing its operations.

ABOUT THE ROLE

The Executive Director will provide strategic leadership and operational oversight across SEAOC’s programs, publications, advocacy efforts, communications, events, and finances. As the primary liaison to external organizations—including engineering societies, policymakers, and industry partners—the Executive Director will elevate SEAOC’s influence and engagement.

SEAOC operates remotely without a physical office, and this position offers location flexibility. However it is anticipated the successful candidate will be located in a metropolitan California locale with easy access to national travel hubs The role requires modest travel, primarily within California, with occasional attendance at National Council of Structural Engineers Associations (NCSEA) events.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Strategic Leadership & Operations
    • Lead SEAOC through its reorganization, working collaboratively with the current SEAOC Executive Director to ensure a smooth leadership transition.
    • Oversee SEAOC’s financial health, program development, education initiatives, and publications.
    • Drive membership engagement and enhance SEAOC’s value to its members.
  • Board & Committee Management
    • Serve as the primary point of contact and lead support for the SEAOC Board of Directors.
    • Support SEAOC standing committees, ensuring effective collaboration and execution.
  • Stakeholder Engagement & Advocacy
    • Represent SEAOC in contracting arrangements and external partnerships.
    • Serve as SEAOC’s lobbyist (mentorship available) or oversee a contract lobbyist.
    • Maintain and strengthen relationships with industry partners, government agencies, and allied organizations.
  • Administrative Oversight
    • Manage and periodically recruit contractors who provide administrative, bookkeeping, membership management, and event support.
    • Oversee the website and digital platforms, ensuring effective communication with members.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • 10+ years of experience in organizational leadership, association management, or engineering management.
  • Proven ability to manage budgets, oversee operations, and lead strategic initiatives.
  • Strong communication, relationship-building, and leadership skills.
  • Experience with membership organizations or non-profits is a plus.
  • Tech-savvy, with proficiency in Office applications and a willingness to adopt new technologies.
  • Ability to adapt and evolve with the role as SEAOC undergoes reorganization.
  • California residency.
