Job DescriptionOverview of the Certified Occupational Therapist Assistant (COTA) Position
The Certified Occupational Therapist Assistant (COTA) delivers rehabilitation services in occupational therapy to patients, working under the guidance of a licensed Occupational Therapist. This role involves following established treatment plans and requires certification, licensure, proficiency in therapy software, and compliance with applicable laws and organizational policies. Key responsibilities encompass patient care, documentation, communication across disciplines, and upholding professional standards within a post-acute care environment.
Position Overview
The COTA is responsible for providing direct rehabilitation care in occupational therapy to patients referred by physicians, under the supervision of a licensed Occupational Therapist (OT), while adhering to all relevant laws, regulations, and organizational standards.
Qualifications and Experience
- Must be NBCOT certified upon hiring, with renewal being optional thereafter
- Graduate from an accredited occupational therapy program (ASOT)
- Currently registered or licensed in the relevant state, with an obligation to maintain an active license in good standing throughout employment
- Preferred one (1) year of experience in a post-acute care or similar setting
- CPR certification required upon hiring or to be obtained during orientation; must remain current throughout employment
Key Responsibilities
- Engage in community health initiatives and projects as appropriate
- Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, and email communication
- Collaborate with patients, families, and support departments to effectively address patient needs
- Consistently demonstrate proper body mechanics
- Make independent decisions when necessary
- Possess knowledge of practices, procedures, and regulations governing operations in a post-acute care facility
- Implement and interpret departmental programs, goals, objectives, policies, and procedures
- Exhibit proficiency in all competency areas, including patient rights, safety, and sanitation
- Maintain professional relationships with colleagues, vendors, and others
- Safeguard the confidentiality of all proprietary and sensitive information
- Adhere to organizational policies, including those related to harassment and compliance
- Demonstrate integrity and professionalism by following the organization’s Code of Conduct and completing required compliance training
Essential Duties
- Implement occupational treatment plans for patients as directed by the supervising OT
- Document patient care accurately and in a timely manner
- Utilize therapy software effectively and accurately
- Provide excellent customer service and maintain a positive attitude towards patients
- Assist in the safe evacuation of patients when necessary
- Exhibit reliable and consistent attendance
- Employ reasoning skills and sound judgment in all tasks
- Communicate effectively and collaborate within an interdisciplinary team
- Engage in various physical activities such as sitting, standing, bending, lifting, pushing, pulling, stooping, walking, reaching, and moving intermittently during work hours
- Read, write, speak, and comprehend the English language
