The Town of Hanover is seeking a motivated and technically skilled Wastewater Treatment Technician to support the daily operations of its wastewater treatment facility. This position plays a vital role in ensuring safe, compliant, and efficient wastewater treatment for the community. For the right candidate, the Town may offer an Assistant Wastewater Treatment Technician pathway, providing hands-on experience and support toward obtaining required state certifications.

This position performs technical duties in the operation, monitoring, and maintenance of the Towns wastewater treatment plant and sewage lift stations. The role supports regulatory compliance, operational efficiency, laboratory testing, and system maintenance to ensure effective wastewater treatment operations.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Perform daily inspections of the wastewater treatment facility and sewage lift stations
  • Utilize wastewater CMMS and data management software
  • Collect wastewater samples and perform laboratory testing; record and report results
  • Collect, prepare, read, and document solids process samples
  • Schedule, collect, and prepare samples for outside laboratory analysis
  • Calibrate and maintain laboratory equipment; maintain related reports and checklists
  • Read and record pump station parameters
  • Assist with pump station maintenance and repairs
  • Repair and maintain plant facilities, equipment, and pump stations
  • Respond to treatment system upsets and alarm systems
  • Respond to after-hours emergencies
  • Monitor pumps, blowers, and related wastewater equipment and make operational adjustments
  • Read meters and gauges; calibrate meters as necessary
  • Operate solids removal equipment
  • Perform general housekeeping, mowing, trimming, and snow removal as needed
  • Perform related duties as assigned

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Knowledge of wastewater treatment plant operations and maintenance
  • Knowledge of water pollution control equipment
  • Knowledge of water sampling and laboratory analysis principles
  • Skill in operating and maintaining pumps, blowers, and solids separation equipment
  • Skill in using hand and power tools
  • Skill in using gauges, meters, and wastewater testing equipment
  • Skill in operating lawn and snow removal equipment
  • Strong oral and written communication skills

Physical Demands and Work Environment

  • Work performed while sitting, standing, stooping, and climbing
  • Occasional lifting of light and heavy objects
  • Use of tools and equipment requiring dexterity
  • Ability to distinguish between shades of color and utilize sense of smell
  • Work performed in office settings, treatment plant environments, and outdoors in cold or inclement weather
  • Exposure to moving machinery, infectious materials, and treatment chemicals
  • Use of protective equipment such as masks, goggles, and gloves required

Minimum Qualifications

  • Specialized training related to wastewater or a technical field in addition to a high school education
  • Experience sufficient to understand basic wastewater treatment principles (apprenticeship, internship, or similar experience)
  • Valid New Hampshire drivers license or ability to obtain
  • Possession of or ability to obtain a Grade II or Grade II OIT Wastewater Treatment License
  • Availability to work outside standard hours, including rotational weekends, holidays, and emergency call-ins

Assistant Wastewater Treatment Technician Option

For candidates who demonstrate strong aptitude and commitment but have not yet obtained required certifications, the Town may consider placement in an Assistant Wastewater Treatment Technician role. This pathway provides:

  • Support in preparing for and obtaining required state certifications
  • Mentorship from licensed operators
  • Clear progression toward full Wastewater Treatment Technician status

Hours of Work:

40 hours a week: 7:00am- 3:30pm Mon-Fri
