Internal Audit Manager

CLASSIFICATION: Exempt

REPORTS TO: Assistant Director of Audit

JOB DESCRIPTION

Summary/Objective

This position is responsible for the execution of the risk-based, integrated audit plan for the holding company and its subsidiaries. The audit plan is designed to provide independent and objective assurance to the Audit Committee of the Burke & Herbert Financial Services Corp. Board of Directors, as well as to executive management, on the design and operating efficiency and effectiveness of the company's internal control environment, risk management and compliance programs.

Essential Functions

  • Manage and perform operational, financial and compliance audits, ensuring they are completed timely and in accordance with the annual audit plan.
  • Supervise and monitor audit staff, provide guidance and training to develop skills and ensure high-quality audits.
  • Review audit workpapers completed by internal audit staff and provide feedback.
  • Aid internal audit staff in planning, performing fieldwork and reporting of results of testing, including evaluating and documenting audit issues and recommendations for their remediation.
  • Monitor the implementation of audit recommendations and follow up on remediation actions.
  • Prepare meaningful reports on internal audits for executive management, the Audit Committee, and the Board of Directors.
  • Ensure the ongoing execution of a robust internal control strategy to drive the most efficient and effective set of key internal controls, establishing a baseline of leading practices and methods.
  • Coordinate with external auditors and support annual financial audits and other assurance efforts.

Other Duties

  • Assist Director of Audit and Assistant Director of Audit in preparation of a strategic and comprehensive annual audit risk assessment and related audit plan.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Skills/Abilities

  • Knowledge of leading practices within a public financial institution; public company work experience preferred but not required.
  • Knowledge of financial services laws and regulations, including those specific to SEC registrants/public institutions.
  • Knowledge and appreciation of regulatory, accounting, and financial industry guidance and leading practices relevant to our operations; ability to plan strategically for future impact.
  • Knowledge of and experience using data analytics.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills to deliver high quality, actionable feedback to management on control issues and potential solutions.
  • Strong analytical, critical thinking and problem-solving skills with strong process orientation.
  • Ability to identify, analyze and interpret trends or patterns in complex data sets.
  • Ability to lead projects and initiatives that drive performance.
  • Ability to formulate long-term strategies while being sensitive to operational implementation realities.
  • Ability to generate new ideas and implement them with overall organizational goals in mind, as well as to take advantage of emerging opportunities.
  • Possess collaborative decision-making abilities to forge successful partnerships across organizational boundaries, at both senior and operational levels.
  • Possess the ability to maintain a high level of confidentiality.
  • A well-organized and self-directed individual with high ethical standards.
  • Maintain a working knowledge of internal control and integrate effective internal controls into all applicable work processes.
  • Stay updated on industry trends, regulatory changes and best practices in banking and internal auditing.

Supervisory Responsibility

This position has supervisory responsibilities.

Work Environment

This job operates in an office setting, the opportunity to telework is not available. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets and fax machines. Office environment with job duties conducted via telephone, face to face meetings, and on the computer.

Physical Demands

This position requires manual dexterity, the ability to lift files and open cabinets. This position requires bending, stooping or standing as necessary.

Travel

Limited travel may be required for this position.

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, or related field required.
  • Related advanced degree preferred.
  • CPA and/or CIA professional certification is preferred.
  • Minimum 5 years of experience in the areas of internal auditing and/or risk management in a financial institution, in a bank regulatory agency, public accounting firm or related fields.
  • Minimum 2 years of experience managing internal audit staff that have varying years of experience and differing skill sets.
  • Experience in professional auditing practices in developing and managing complex audit plans, including financial, credit, operational, compliance, and technology audits.
