Reports to: FBO Line Technician Supervisor
Location: San Bernardino International Airport
Salary Range: $20.27 - $26.45 per hour with full benefits
DEFINITION
This is the entry level classification in the series. Under direct supervision, learns and performs aviation related services, including aircraft fueling/de-fueling, operation of motorized/non-motorized ground service equipment and performs basic customer service duties.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED
Receives direct supervision from the FBO Line Technician Supervisor. As experience and proficiency are gained, assignments will become more varied, and supervision becomes more general than direct. Exercises no direct supervision over staff.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES:
The following duties are typical for this classification. Incumbents may not perform all of the listed duties and/or may be required to perform additional or different duties from those set forth.
- Receives, stores, transfers, and dispenses aviation fuel products.
- Communicates over the Airport radio system and marshals’ aircraft in the ramp.
- Operates motorized ground service equipment and fuel tank trucks.
- Fuels aircraft per flight crew/flight plan requirements; may de-fuel aircraft under direct supervision.
- Inspects fueling equipment and vehicles, reports malfunctions or inconsistencies.
- Performs accurate fueling calculations and completes and submits all documentation associated with fueling activities. Maintains accurate manual and computerized logs and records of work performed and materials and equipment used; prepares reports as required.
- Receives and dispenses aviation grade fuel and other fuel types in accordance with regulatory requirements.
- As directed, assists in the recovery of aircraft incapable of movement under their own power, including downed aircraft due to mechanical failure or other issues.
- Interacts with aircraft personnel and passengers and provides basic customer service including luggage handling and logistical inquiries and support.
- Monitors flight software program to track inbound flights; listens to communications from air traffic control tower regarding inbound flights.
- Responds to fuel emergencies, such as fuel spills, utilizing emergency response cart and follows established environmental/company guidelines.
- Participates in inspections with regulatory agencies.
- Observes safe work methods and makes appropriate use of related safety equipment.
- Tows aircraft under supervision of a Line Technician II or Supervisor.
- Maintains facilities, fueling areas, storage sites, and other work areas in a clean and orderly condition, including securing equipment and tools at the close of the workday.
- Establishes, maintains, and fosters positive and effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work including the public, vendors, contractors, and agency staff.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Requirements:
QUALIFICATIONS
Knowledge of:
- Principles, practices, methods, equipment, materials, and tools used in fueling aircraft.
- Occupational hazards and safety equipment and practices related to the work.
- Modern office practices, methods, computer equipment and basic applications.
- Principles and procedures of record-keeping and reporting.
- Safe driving rules and practices.
- Techniques for providing a high level of customer service.
Ability to:
- Maintain accurate logs, records, and basic written records of work performed.
- Understand and follow oral and written instructions.
- Make accurate arithmetic calculations.
- Identify priorities, and meet critical time deadlines.
- Use English effectively to communicate over various mediums.
- Use tact, initiative, prudence, and independent judgment.
Education and Experience:
Any combination of training and experience that would provide the required knowledge, skills and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the required qualifications would be:
Equivalent to the completion of the twelfth (12th) grade and one (1) year of related experience in FBO fueling activities and ground support or related service.
Conditions of Employment
- Possession of, or ability to obtain, a valid California Driver’s License
- Successfully complete background check to obtain and maintain federally mandated security clearances where required.
- Completion of a 10-panel drug screen for all substances deemed illegal by the Federal Government
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Must possess mobility to work in the field; strength, stamina, and mobility to perform medium physical work, to work in confined spaces and around machines, to climb and descend ladders, walk on uneven terrain, to operate varied hand and power tools and fueling equipment, and a motor vehicle; vision to read printed materials and a computer screen; and hearing and speech to communicate in person and over the telephone or radio. The job involves fieldwork requiring frequent walking to identify problems or hazards. Finger dexterity is needed to access, enter, and retrieve data using a computer keyboard or calculator and to operate above-mentioned tools and equipment. Positions in this classification bend, stoop, kneel, reach, and climb to perform work and inspect work sites. Employees must possess the ability to lift, carry, push, and pull materials and objects weighing up to 75 pounds, or heavier weights with the use of proper equipment.
ENVIRONMENTAL ELEMENTS
Employees primarily work in the field and are exposed to loud noise levels, vibration, confining workspace, chemicals, dust, fumes, mechanical and electrical hazards, grease, oils, solvents, machinery with extremely hot surfaces and moving parts, moving objects or other vehicles, as well as cold and hot temperatures, inclement weather conditions, and road hazards. Employees may interact with upset staff or customers.
