Job Summary:
The Claims Adjuster is responsible for investigating, evaluating, reserving, negotiating, and settling property, casualty, or workers’ compensation claims in compliance with best practices and regulatory requirements. This role focuses on promptly and equitably resolving claims to minimize organizational liability and control overall claims costs.
Essential Functions:
- Investigate relevant facts and assess findings to determine coverage, negligence, and liability for submitted claims.
- Establish and document appropriate reserves based on the probable cost of each claim.
- Issue timely payments to claimants and vendors in accordance with regulatory standards.
- Negotiate claim settlements and pursue monetary recoveries for damages to company assets.
- Maintain thorough documentation of claim activities following established procedures.
- Prepare detailed claims narrative reports, including legal application of the Texas Tort Claims Act and resolution recommendations.
- Communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing, with claimants, witnesses, employees, attorneys, medical professionals, government entities, and contractors.
- Determine value and extent of damages or injuries through documentation review, including medical bills and property appraisals.
- Perform additional duties as assigned.
Minimum Requirements:
- High School Diploma or GED.
- Minimum of 1 year of experience handling claims, including investigation, evaluation, reserving, negotiation, and settlement in disciplines such as workers’ compensation, casualty (auto & property), personal injury, appraising, and/or subrogation.
- Possession of a Texas Multi-Line Claims Adjuster License (TIC 4101) or ability to obtain within six (6) months of hire.
- Valid Class "C" Texas Driver’s License.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Knowledge of general negligence principles, especially within the context of the Texas Tort Claims Act.
- Proficiency with computer applications and Risk Management Information Systems (RMIS).
- Ability to analyze proof of loss and property appraisals to determine actual cash value.
- Strong documentation and record-keeping abilities with attention to detail.
- Ability to estimate materials and labor for claim-related projects.
- Ability to handle confidential information with discretion.
- Effective written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to build and maintain positive working relationships with internal teams, external vendors, property owners, and governmental agencies.
- Capability to meet the physical requirements of the role, including fieldwork when necessary.
Physical Demands and Working Conditions:
- Physical requirements include occasionally lifting up to 20 pounds.
- Primarily office-based with extended periods of sitting; occasional standing, walking, and climbing during field visits.
- Visual acuity, clear speech, and hearing required.
- Occasional operation of a company or personal vehicle for field investigations.
- May require work outside of standard business hours, including evenings, weekends, holidays, and flexible scheduling.
