Electrical Controls Engineer
Location: Atlanta, GA (Approx. 40% travel within Georgia)
About the Role
Vulcan Materials Company is seeking an Electrical Controls Engineer to support capital projects and plant operations across aggregate, asphalt, and ready-mix facilities. This role combines controls design, PLC programming, field troubleshooting, and project execution. You’ll work closely with plant operations, contractors, and internal engineering teams to deliver reliable, high-performing control systems.
What You’ll Do
Cost Estimating – Develop electrical and controls cost estimates for new facilities and plant modifications, including PLC, HMI, networking, software, and installation costs.
Controls Engineering & Design – Design complete process control systems for heavy industrial plants. Develop ladder logic, HMI applications, plant networks, and control schematics. Support conceptual design, detailed layouts, and equipment selection. Ensure plant electrical integrity, reliability, and performance.
Troubleshooting & Field Support – Troubleshoot PLC systems and resolve electrical and control issues. Write and modify ladder logic from scratch. Provide on-site technical support at plant locations (approximately 40% travel, primarily day trips within GA).
Project Management – Manage the controls scope of capital projects. Coordinate with contractors and internal stakeholders. Develop schedules and ensure milestone execution.
Project Review & Standardization – Review capital and expense projects for design accuracy and feasibility. Contribute to engineering and controls standardization efforts. Stay current on emerging industrial automation technologies.
Qualifications
Education – Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering preferred. PE license preferred but not required.
Experience – 5+ years designing and installing heavy industrial control systems. Experience in aggregates, mining, asphalt, or similar industrial environments preferred. Strong field troubleshooting experience required.
Technical Skills – Allen-Bradley PLC systems required. Experience with GE, Wonderware, and PI Historian preferred. Knowledge of SQL Server and reporting tools is a plus. Solid understanding of industrial networking required.
Additional Requirements – Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously. Comfortable working in deadline-driven environments. Valid driver’s license and ability to travel to plant sites.
