The Medication Technician (Med Tech) supports the health, safety, and recovery of clients in an Alcohol and Other Drug (AOD) treatment setting, including those in medical or social detox. Under supervision of licensed or clinical staff, the Med Tech administers prescribed medications, assists in monitoring clients during detoxification, documents all medication-related services, and helps ensure compliance with facility and regulatory standards.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Safely administer prescribed and over-the-counter medications according to physician orders and facility policies.
- Accurately document medication administration, refusals, client complaints, and any observed side effects.
- Maintain up-to-date medication administration records (MARs) and other logs as required.
- Store and manage medications, including controlled substances, in compliance with DHCS, DEA, and facility protocols.
- Monitor clients in detox for withdrawal symptoms, changes in behavior, or medical complications.
- Complete regular detox checks and document symptoms using approved withdrawal scales (e.g., CIWA, COWS).
- Immediately report abnormal findings or signs of medical emergency to the nurse or supervisor.
- Provide support and reassurance to clients experiencing withdrawal, while maintaining appropriate boundaries.
- Assist clinical staff with vitals, observation, and wellness checks as needed.
- Ensure medication room is clean, secure, and well-stocked with necessary supplies and documentation forms.
- Assist with medication pickups, refills, returns, and restocking in coordination with pharmacy and nursing staff.
- Educate clients on medication compliance and detox process, within scope of training.
- Participate in shift hand-offs, team meetings, and ongoing training related to detox, medication safety, and documentation.
- Comply with HIPAA, infection control, and client confidentiality at all times.
Qualifications:
- High School Diploma or GED required.
- Completion of an approved Medication Technician training program or equivalent certification per state requirements.
- At least 6 months of experience working in an AOD, detox, mental health, or residential facility.
- Working knowledge of withdrawal symptoms, detox procedures, and medication monitoring.
Preferred Qualifications:
- CNA, MA, or other healthcare certification with medication administration scope.
- Prior experience in detox or residential substance use treatment settings.
- Familiarity with DHCS, Joint Commission, or CARF standards.
