Job DescriptionSalary: $60,000 - $75,000

Do you enjoy translating complex regulations into clear, defensible written products? Are you detail-oriented and comfortable reviewing sensitive documents for public release? Do you have experience supporting Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) processes within a federal or government-contracting environment?

Avid Core is seeking a Communications Specialist to support federal clients with FOIA compliance, document review, and public release coordination. This role will focus on reviewing agency records, applying FOIA exemptions, supporting redactions, and preparing clear written communications related to FOIA responses. The position will work closely with attorneys, project managers, and government stakeholders to ensure timely and compliant responses to FOIA requests.

This role is well suited for a junior professional with strong writing skills and foundational knowledge of FOIA regulations who is comfortable working in a structured, deadline-driven environment.

Salary Range: $60,000 $75,000, based on experience and qualifications.

Overall Responsibilities:

  • Support the intake, tracking, and processing of FOIA requests for federal clients
  • Review agency records for responsiveness to FOIA requests
  • Apply FOIA exemptions and assist in preparing redacted versions of documents for public release
  • Draft FOIA response letters, acknowledgment letters, and related correspondence
  • Coordinate with subject matter experts, attorneys, and client stakeholders to clarify document content and release determinations
  • Maintain detailed tracking logs and documentation of FOIA actions, deadlines, and case status
  • Prepare summaries, justifications, and supporting documentation for exemption determinations
  • Support quality control reviews to ensure accuracy, completeness, and regulatory compliance
  • Assist in maintaining standard operating procedures and documentation related to FOIA processes
  • Support reporting requirements related to FOIA metrics and case management
  • Participate in client meetings to discuss case status, challenges, and timelines
  • Ensure compliance with federal records management, privacy, and information security requirements
  • Provide general project and administrative support as needed
  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications/Skills:

  • 23 years of experience in communications, document review, regulatory compliance, legal support, or FOIA processing (entry-level candidates with strong relevant experience will be considered)
  • Foundational knowledge of the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) and common FOIA exemptions preferred
  • Experience supporting federal agencies or government contractors strongly preferred
  • Strong written communication skills, including the ability to draft clear, defensible correspondence
  • Demonstrated attention to detail and ability to review documents with a high level of accuracy
  • Experience handling sensitive or confidential information
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite, particularly Word and Excel
  • Ability to manage multiple deadlines and competing priorities
  • Strong organizational and document management skills
  • Ability to obtaina publictrust clearance

Education:

Bachelors degree in Communications, Public Policy, Government, Political Science, Legal Studies, Journalism, or a related field preferred, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Location:

The position is based in Washington, D.C. Candidates may be expected to work a hybrid schedule with time both on-site and remote, depending on client requirements.

Candidates will be provided with a computer; however, they must have a steady internet connection and a phone.
