Job Description

The Laboratory Technician supports a research team focused on developing and evaluating novel plant breeding methods. Working under the guidance of a supervisor, this role performs plant tissue culture activities, assists with plant transformation and propagation, and conducts analytical assays on plant tissue samples. The Laboratory Technician collaborates closely with team members to process samples, collect data, and maintain high-quality laboratory practices in a sterile, research-driven environment.

Responsibilities

  • Assist the research team by creating, executing, and scoring experiments that support plant breeding and biotechnology projects.
  • Process biological samples under sterile laboratory conditions using aseptic techniques.
  • Measure, image, and analyze experimental results to support data-driven conclusions.
  • Coordinate sampling activities and prepare samples as needed to meet project timelines.
  • Execute plant tissue culture work, including plant transformation, plant propagation, and related laboratory procedures.
  • Conduct analytical assays of plant tissue samples as required by the research protocols.
  • Maintain a safe and compliant work environment by consistently applying aseptic and sterile techniques.
  • Document experimental details accurately and thoroughly, including methods, observations, and results.
  • Analyze data and interpret results to provide meaningful input to the research team.
  • Record pertinent information in proprietary and standard software applications to ensure accurate data tracking and reporting.
  • Collaborate with team members to coordinate laboratory activities and ensure efficient workflow.
  • Follow established protocols and standard operating procedures while contributing to continuous improvement of laboratory practices.

Essential Skills

  • Background in biological sciences such as biology, chemistry, microbiology, or related laboratory disciplines.
  • Hands-on laboratory experience working with biological samples under sterile conditions.
  • Experience with plant tissue culture, plant transformation, or plant propagation in an academic or industry setting.
  • Ability to perform analytical assays on plant tissue samples and interpret laboratory results.
  • Strong problem-solving skills to troubleshoot experiments and laboratory processes.
  • High attention to detail and the ability to stay focused while performing repetitive tasks.
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a team and independently with minimal supervision.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills for documenting experiments and collaborating with colleagues.
  • Strong organizational skills to manage multiple tasks and maintain accurate records.
  • Proficiency using proprietary and standard software applications for data entry, analysis, and documentation.
  • Demonstrated work ethic, reliability, and commitment to laboratory safety and quality.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Associate or Bachelor’s degree in biological sciences or a closely related field, or an equivalent combination of relevant education and experience.
  • Industry-related experience in plant breeding, biotechnology, or laboratory research is highly desirable.
  • Plant transformation experience in a classroom or industry setting is strongly preferred.
  • Experience in quality assurance practices within a laboratory environment is beneficial.
  • Self-motivated and goal-oriented mindset with strong time management skills.
  • Ability to adapt to changing project needs and contribute to a collaborative research culture.

Work Environment

This role is based in a laboratory setting that emphasizes plant breeding and biotechnology research. The Laboratory Technician works primarily in sterile environments, using aseptic techniques and standard laboratory equipment to handle plant tissue, perform tissue culture, and conduct analytical assays. The position follows a regular schedule of Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., supporting consistent daytime work hours. The work involves close collaboration with a research team, regular use of proprietary and standard software applications for data recording and analysis, and adherence to established safety protocols and laboratory procedures. The environment promotes careful, detail-oriented work and encourages a culture of scientific rigor, teamwork, and continuous learning.

This is a Contract position based out of Johnston, IA.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $27.00 - $27.00/hr.
