Job Description

Position Title: Psychiatric Technician

Department: Child & Adolescent Acute Care Unit, Adult Acute Care Unit, Residential Unit, Outpatient Unit

Supervised By: Program Director & Supervisor, Unit RN

Summary of Responsibilities: The Psychiatric technician preforms routine patient care duties.

Special qualifications:

  • High school diploma or GED, current driver license, experience working with and knowledge of psychiatric patients preferred.

Physical Requirements:

Due to safety concerns candidates must be able to preform these pre-requisite physical task:

Heavy lifting up to (70) pounds, pulling and reaching above shoulder, ability to process and respond to written and verbal instruction and perform multiple tasks simultaneously.

Special Qualifications:

Ability to work with minimal supervision. Must work in conjunction with other staff in a supportive way.

Duties and responsibilities:

  • Assists the LPN and RN in the overall management of the milieu.
  • Provides care based to patients in a manner that considers safety, patients’ rights, comfort, and the therapeutic environment.
  • Remains in patient areas whenever possible observing behaviors and notifying appropriate nursing staff when needed
  • Assists patients with activities of daily living. Encouraging independent behavior when appropriate. Also assist with direct physical care of patient when necessary or as directed, i.e. feeding, bathing, dressing, and ambulation.
  • Collects vital signs, height, weight, and specimens as directed.
  • Assists patients during mealtime. Records intake as directed.
  • Assists with patient trips outside the hospital, as directed
  • Serves as a role model for patients and co-workers.
  • Assists with seclusion / physical restraints under the supervision of an RN.
  • Demonstrates awareness of and follows policies and procedures related to contraband and sharps, search policy, and understands significance of enforcing these policies to promote a safe, drug free environment.
  • Interacts with patients and staff in a professional manner.
  • Consistently demonstrates competence in day-to-day scheduling of duties by completing task in a timely

manner with little assistance for others.

  • Recognizes and performs duties which need to be performed, although not assigned, regularly helps co-workers.
  • Abides by the personnel policy and procedures of the hospital.
  • Preforms all other duties assigned.
