MobilizeGreen seeks a conservation-minded 11-16 week LA/GIS NPS Conservation Fellows Intern to support the Pacific West Region, Project Development Branch of the National Park Service with park facility and landscape improvement projects in parks across the region. The Pacific West Region includes more than 60 national park sites within the eight states of California, Hawaii, Idaho, Nevada, Oregon, Washington, portions of Arizona and Montana and the territories of Guam, American Samoa, as well as the Northern Mariana Islands. With offices in San Francisco, Seattle and Honolulu, the Pacific West Region works to safeguard our National Park treasures for the enjoyment of future generations and to share their stories with more than 61 million visitors each year.

As an LA/GIS intern, you will assist parks with landscape designs for NPS maintenance crews to perform day labor facility improvement projects, as well as assist with preliminary design drawings and specs and related activities for contracted projects.  You may assist NPS staff on projects related to pathways, surveys/layouts, parking lots, campgrounds. You will also provide technical consultation and documents for implementing actions to reduce barriers to accessibility. In this role, you will have the opportunity to provide technical design expertise on real NPS projects, and have the opportunity to help implement projects that will provide greater access for visitors to National Parks.

The NPS Conservation Fellows program is a unique opportunity designed for current undergraduate, graduate, or PhD students to launch their natural and cultural resources careers. The intern will receive hands-on learning experience, mentorship, and coaching to complete mission-critical work while developing leadership, critical thinking, and strategic communication skills. This is a developmental program.

Location: Pacific West Region

Term: 11 weeks, up to 16 weeks, Full Time (40 hrs per week)

Duty Station: Located in the Pacific Standard or Mountain Time Zone

Position Duties:

  • Assist NPS professionals with landscape architecture projects.
  • Perform site visits to project locations, and collect data and conduct field assessments.
  • Produce trip reports and notes.
  • Prepare preliminary and final drawings, specifications, and construction cost estimates.
  • Coordinate with park and senior designers on peer reviews.
  • Assist with preparing for construction contracting and management of projects.
  • Prepare and deliver a final presentation to the unit
  • Other duties as assigned.

Eligibility:

  • Undergraduate or graduate degree in Landscape Architecture or GIS. Special consideration will be given to interns in their 3rd or 4th year of their 4-year Bachelor’s degree program or first year of graduate school.
  • Able to work independently on creating landscape layouts, designs and concepts for park improvement projects.
  • Writing and communication skills.
  • Strategic thinking ability.
  • Able to self-start/work independently and in teams.
  • Able and willing to perform duties outdoors in varying weather conditions
  • Able to complete agency computer, privacy, and records management training successfully
  • You are a U.S. citizen or lawful permanent resident and have a valid driver’s license.

Work Environment:

The intern will mostly be in office but site visits will be required.

Physical Requirements: The work involves both office and field work and ranges from sedentary to strenuous. Field work requires physical exertion such as walking over rough surfaces and operating in remote environments. Members should be comfortable carrying their own supplies (food, water, etc.) through similar conditions, as well as bending, crouching, stooping, lifting or reaching. Field work can take place in a variety of weather conditions, including both cold and extremely hot temperatures.  Applicants must be comfortable driving in off-road conditions and boarding large and small boats.
