Shipping Clerk

ROLE

We need an experienced Shipping Clerk at the Naval Dosimetry Center (NDC). The NDC serves as the Navy’s ionizing radiation dosimetry center of excellence for radiation protection programs for the Navy and Marine Corps. In this role, you will use the U.S. Postal system, FedEx system, and United Postal Service requirements in packaging and mailing traceable packages to ensure that the sets of dosimeters are accurately mailed to Navy facilities worldwide. RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Make recommendations for improvements to existing receipt and shipping techniques used at the NDC
  • Produce a list of customers that are scheduled to receive dosimeters during the current shipping week
  • Receive packages and parcels from the U.S. Postal Service for the NDC
  • Act as the customer point of contact for all shipping issues
  • Identify and record serial numbers of dosimeters before shipment
  • Identify and select dosimeters shipped to commands
  • Manage dosimeters that are rejected by the shipping machine
  • Create a computer diskette for each shipment of dosimeters that contains files necessary for customers to manage and issue the dosimeters
  • Package, wrap, and ship dosimeters promptly
  • Generate and attach mailing labels with correct command addresses
  • Maintain accurate assignment and entry of registered, certified, and express mail numbers in the U.S. Postal Service computer database
  • Ensure mailed packages include the correct number of dosimeters as listed on the shipping machine printout, a NDC address label, radiation warning labels, colored dosimeter holder stickers, computer diskette with dosimeter bar code numbers, and an identification reader inventory report
  • Operate the Harshaw Model 8800 dosimeter identification readers and shipping machines
  • Perform routine maintenance and troubleshooting of the Harshaw 8800 machines
  • Operate the shipping computer programs that generate shipping lists, data diskettes, mailing labels, and update dosimetry databases
  • Perform monthly statistical process control and generate reports for the number of dosimeters that fail the sorting process and the reasons for the failure, dosimeters provided by processing and made available for shipping, and the number of dosimeters needed to complete the weekly shipping requirements
  • Collaborate with all of NDC's customers in a positive manner that promotes innovation and resolution of problems
  • Successfully complete the personnel qualification requirements (PQS) for shipping clerks and other PQS as deemed necessary to support the above requirements. Examinations are included as part of the PQS process

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Knowledge of personal computer hardware and software technologies as well as local area network systems and configurations for use in transferring raw data over a local area network
  • Knowledge of computer databases, especially Microsoft Access, shipping machine software, and ability to understand locally created data management programs
  • Knowledge of the U.S. Postal system, FedEx system, and United Postal Service requirements in packaging and mailing of traceable packages to ensure that the sets of dosimeters are accurately mailed to Navy facilities throughout the world
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Able to qualify as a U.S Mail Carrier and obtain a mail carrier card

EDUCATION

  • Associate’s degree or higher in Business, Health, or a related field

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Experience with military procedural documents and policies and working in a military environment
  • Experience operating the Hershaw Model 8800 TLD Readers
  • Able to stand for prolonged periods (~3 hours)
  • Able to bend and lift boxes to 15 lbs.
  • Able to consistently read small print and labels (9 pt. font)

  • U.S. citizenship is required since this role supports the U.S. Federal government
  • Ability to pass a background investigation
  • Secret Security Clearance Required

Regularly required to sit for extended periods up to 80% of the time; frequently required to move about to access file cabinets and use office equipment such as PC, copier, fax, telephone, cell phone, etc. Occasionally required to reach overhead, bend, and lift objects of up to 10 lbs. Specific vision abilities required by this job include the use of computer monitor screens up to 80% of the time.
