JOB TITLE: School Counselor

REPORTS TO: Principal and other authorized administrators

JOB SUMMARY:

Provide support and leadership in delivering comprehensive counseling services pertaining to academic achievement, career development, and personal/social/emotional growth of all students

QUALIFICATIONS:

Education: Minimum of a Master's Degree in related field required

Licenses/Certification: Valid Georgia professional service certificate in school counseling.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Knowledge of tests and measurement theory and

of community resources and services available for student assistance; Ability to apply developmental, learning, counseling, and education theories and principles to provide advisement in large-group, classroom, small-group, and individual settings and make referrals to appropriate school and community resources as needed; Ability to analyze data to inform work and decision making, analyze and evaluate available data, assess student needs and develop and implement procedures and policies to support student achievement; Ability to consult and collaborate with parents, school personnel and the general public

DUTIES / RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Provide a comprehensive counseling program with relevant learning experiences in the three domains: Academic achievement, career development and social/emotional growth
  • Coordinate appraisal, advisement, and counseling services designed to respond to student needs on an individual and/or small group basis
  • Collaborate on the development and management of a data-driven, comprehensive school counseling program using standards-based curriculum, resources, and data to address the needs of all students
  • Implement a comprehensive counseling program by spending 80% of time in school counseling classroom lessons, appraisal and advisement, counseling, and indirect student services and 20% in program planning and school support
  • Coordinate appraisal, advisement, and counseling services designed to respond to student needs on an individual and/or small group basis
  • Intervene and provide support during crisis situations and participates on school crisis team
  • Evaluate the effectiveness of the counseling standards-based curriculum, interventions, and programs in order to assess and further develop the future school counseling program
  • Promote a safe, positive learning environment which is inclusive of ALL students and advocates for student needs in order to reach their educational goals
  • Create a student-centered environment which promotes post-secondary planning and the development of soft skills
  • Prepare students for the transition to the next level: middle school, activities and options.
  • Plan and coordinate programs such as career fairs, test preparation, improved/perfect attendance celebrations and other extensions of the counseling program.
  • Use individual student planning activities and classroom guidance to assist students in navigating educational and community experiences that support their needs and develop their potential.
  • Collaborate with parents/guardians and educators to assist students with educational and career planning
  • Exhibit a commitment to professional ethics and the mission, vision and beliefs of the school counseling program and participates in professional growth opportunities
  • Communicate effectively with students, parents/guardians, district and school personnel, and other stakeholders in a way that enhances student learning and improves the comprehensive school counseling program
  • Assist teachers in understanding their students, including providing and interpreting student data.
  • Provide in-service training on topics related to the school counseling program and supporting student achievement.
  • Performs other tasks consistent with the goals and objectives of this position.

WAGE/SALARY LEVEL: As set by the BCBOE in accordance with the teacher pay scale

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: 200 days per year, 8 hours per day.

EVALUATION: Performance will be evaluated annually by the principal or designee
