Job Overview:

Overair is looking for a Sr. Motor Control Engineer to take ownership of design and implementation of motor control algorithms and embedded software for advanced motor controllers. These families of motor controllers will be applied on various aircraft systems, including propulsion and flight control actuation. This is an exciting opportunity to contribute to in-house development of motor drives and controllers. The overall objective is to make high quality technical contributions and meet program timelines for individual projects in a fast-paced environment.

Roles and Responsibilities:

  • Closed loop position control of permanent magnet motors; including redundant architectures and multi-phase motors controlled from servo drives.
  • Traditional and sensor-less control of permanent magnet propulsion motors; including inverter modulation techniques, current control, trajectory control, fault detection, and efficiency optimization.
  • Optimization of motor controls algorithm using MATLAB and PLECS.
  • Testing and integration with actuator test rig.
  • Dynamometer testing and interpretation of data for controls development, validation and improvement.
  • Develop motor controller firmware architecture.
  • Board bring-up of next-generation motor controllers.
  • Write interface code for sensors and digital communication.
  • Develop prototypes to prove out key design concepts and quantify technical constraints.
  • Write high quality structured bare metal software for embedded processors (e.g. ARM, PowerPC, x86).
  • Design embedded software to meet requirements including verification and traceability.
  • Work with power electronics, motor design, and electromechanical engineers to develop motor control systems.

Required Qualifications:

  • Fast and agile learner who is able to work hands-on in an exciting startup environment.
  • Ability to work on-site at Santa Ana location.
  • BS/MS in Electrical or Computer Engineering with 5+ years of experience in Motor Control or related fields.
  • Familiar with microcontroller architectures and communication protocols.
  • Prior Experience with development of automotive/robotics/industrial motor drives.
  • Working knowledge of power electronic converters and inverters.

Desired Qualifications

  • PhD in Electrical Engineering with a concentration on Motor controls/Power Electronic controls.
  • Understanding of principles of PM motor design.

Overair expects to pay: $100,000 - $150,000 per year. Your level and the compensation package offered will be determined by location, job-related knowledge, skills, and experience.
