Job Title: Nursing Director

Position Overview
We are seeking an experienced and strategic Nursing Director to provide overall direction and long-term operational leadership for designated nursing departments within a large, complex healthcare system. This role is responsible for planning, budgeting, personnel oversight, quality improvement, operational efficiency, and coordination of clinical services. The Nursing Director collaborates closely with physicians, department leaders, and executive leadership to ensure high-quality, patient-centered care and regulatory compliance.


Primary Responsibilities

  • Provide strategic and operational leadership for multiple clinical departments.
  • Develop, implement, and monitor departmental goals aligned with organizational objectives.
  • Lead fiscal management activities including preparation and oversight of operating, capital, and payroll budgets.
  • Analyze revenue and expenses and implement cost-effective operational improvements.
  • Establish and enforce clear policies related to equipment, supplies, staffing, and service utilization.
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary committees and leadership to evaluate and implement cost management strategies.
  • Implement and oversee quality management initiatives that support patient-centered care.
  • Partner with Quality and Risk teams to develop, implement, and monitor quality indicators, audits, and performance metrics.
  • Evaluate workflows, job design, and departmental processes; implement improvements to enhance productivity and efficiency.
  • Serve as a leadership resource for physicians, providers, staff, patients, families, and administrators.
  • Communicate effectively across departments and with community healthcare partners.
  • Oversee department facilities, including environmental safety, equipment functionality, space planning, renovations, and capital improvements.
  • Participate in interdisciplinary and organization-wide committees.
  • Select, train, schedule, supervise, motivate, and evaluate nursing staff and leaders.
  • Support professional development and continuing education opportunities for team members.
  • Ensure compliance with all applicable federal, state, regulatory, and accreditation standards.
  • Maintain current knowledge of healthcare trends, regulations, and best practices and integrate them into departmental operations.


Minimum Qualifications

Education:

  • Graduate of an accredited school of nursing.
  • Master’s degree required. If the master’s degree is not in nursing, either a bachelor’s or doctoral degree must be in nursing.

Experience:

  • Minimum of 10 years of progressively responsible nursing experience.
  • At least 5 years of leadership experience at the Nursing Manager or Director level.

Licensure:

  • Current Registered Nurse (RN) license or valid temporary permit. Compact RN licensure accepted where applicable.


Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Strong leadership and management skills including budgeting, staffing, and operational oversight.
  • Knowledge of value-based purchasing and healthcare quality reporting systems.
  • Understanding of population health concepts, specialty clinic metrics, and accountable care models.
  • Ability to analyze data, interpret reports, and implement performance improvement strategies.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills with the ability to present information to diverse audiences.
  • Demonstrated ability to recruit, motivate, and develop high-performing teams.
  • Highly organized with the ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
  • Creative and innovative problem-solving abilities.


Work Environment and Physical Requirements

  • Primarily office-based within a healthcare setting.
  • Regular sitting, standing, and walking throughout the facility.
  • Daily use of computers, office equipment, and telephone communication.
  • Frequent writing, typing, filing, and document review.
  • Requires effective speaking, hearing, and vision abilities.
  • Indoor work environment with potential limited exposure to infectious diseases in clinical areas.
